IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent years, funding to several medical research projects was done by private organizations. Some people argue that it is a positive development. However, from my standpoint budget must be allocated by the government. This essay will examine why I hold this position.
One of the major reasons is that the authorities have the whole budget of the country and they can allocate it in a much better way as compared to private firms or individuals. Moreover, officials can give the significant amount of funds due to the fact that privately owned companies do not have that much budget. For instance, my cousin is a cardiologist and he required an advanced machine for the better treatment of patients but he lacked the funds. He first requested one privately owned firm to allocate some amount but they refused because of the lack of resources then, he wrote a letter to the higher officials and they eventually agreed and they gave a reasonable amount from which he bought that machine and now he is treating his patients efficiently.
Secondly, government is responsible for the well being of public and they must take care their people. They collect money from individuals in the form of taxes and its the duty of officials to spend that amount effectively.Authorities must reserve some specific funds for the medical research projects in their budget. The fact is there is no alternative of public health and do whatever is good for that.
In conclusion, although private companies and individuals can contribute but administration is the final boss. For the reasons outlined above, I firmly believe that goverment should carry research projects.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you argue that government should fund medical research, and both body paragraphs give relevant reasons—its greater capacity to allocate funds and its responsibility for public health. The example about your cousin and the medical machine helps illustrate how public funding can support treatment. This addresses the task, but the discussion is not fully developed across all the options: private companies and individuals are mentioned mainly as contrasts, without explaining when their involvement might be useful or why government funding should take priority in research specifically. The example also concerns purchasing a treatment machine rather than funding a research project. Develop that link and explain the limits or complementary role of private funding to make the argument more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Sequencing phrases such as “One of the major reasons” and “Secondly” help readers follow the argument, and the example is placed within the relevant paragraph. However, some connections are mechanical, and the long anecdote contains several events joined together, making the progression harder to follow. The sentence “The fact is there is no alternative of public health and do whatever is good for that” is also unclear in how it connects to the preceding point. Use clearer links between claims and evidence, and divide the anecdote into shorter sentences with explicit references.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “medical research projects,” “privately owned companies,” “funds,” and “public health.” There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “from my standpoint” and “allocate.” However, several choices are imprecise or unnatural, which limits the clarity and flexibility of the vocabulary. For example, “the final boss” is too informal for an academic essay, while “carry research projects” is not a natural collocation. “The whole budget of the country” and “reasonable amount” are also vague in context. Aim for precise academic collocations and check spelling, including “government,” which is misspelled in the conclusion.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “a cardiologist and he required…” and a reason clause introduced by “because.” The main argument remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur and occasionally make sentences awkward. Examples include “government is responsible … and they must take care their people,” where agreement and the verb pattern are faulty, and “its the duty,” which needs a possessive form and an apostrophe. The long sentence beginning “For instance, my cousin…” also joins several independent clauses without adequate punctuation. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, verb patterns such as “take care of,” and sentence boundaries; these corrections would make your varied structures more controlled.
