IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Lots of medical research projects are funded by private compaies as they have advanced technology and specialised researchers. I believe medical research shoud be carried out by both private companies and government but the government should take the lead role.

Private companies have advanced technology and a team of specialised researchers that would help them develop new ways to treat a disease or find a cure for different illnesses. They can invest substantial amount of money in developing new medicines. Moreover, competition between these private companies can encourage innovation and speed up discoveries. For instance, with the help of top level professional team, not only would they produce better products but also develop various ways to treat an illness.

On the other hand, governments can fund research into diseases that affect disadvantaged communities. With the help of government funding it will be a lot easier to do research as it requires a large sum of money. Government can also be a better choice than private companies as they are more likely to prioritise public health rather than money. They can also regulate private companies to ensure medicines are safe and affortable. Although private companies play a significant role in advancing medical science, I belive government should take primary responsibility for medical research while collaborating with private organisations to maximise its effectiveness.

In conclusion, although private companies can produce productive results, government should still take the leading role as they does not focus on money and their primary goal is to help public.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you support both sources of funding but argue that government should lead. You address the roles of private companies and government, and relevant points include innovation, research into diseases affecting disadvantaged communities, and regulation of medicine safety and affordability. These points make the response relevant and cover the main parts of the question. However, some ideas are asserted rather than fully explained. For example, the claim that competition speeds discoveries would be stronger with a specific example or explanation of how this benefits patients. The final point that government’s primary goal is to help the public also needs qualification, since public funding can have competing priorities. Develop these points with clearer reasoning and evidence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs compare the roles of private companies and government, and a conclusion restates your preference. The contrastive signpost “On the other hand” helps the reader follow the shift in focus, while “Moreover” and “For instance” introduce supporting points. This logical arrangement meets the lower-band expectations and shows some flexibility in linking ideas. To make progression more consistently smooth, ensure each example directly develops the point before it. The sentence beginning “For instance” mainly repeats the claim about specialist teams rather than giving a concrete example. Also, the conclusion repeats the main position but does not synthesise the two roles as clearly as the introduction does.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “specialised researchers,” “innovation,” “disadvantaged communities,” “public health,” and “regulate.” These choices communicate the main ideas and show attempts to use more precise language than basic everyday terms. Some word choices and collocations are less natural or precise, however: “productive results” is vague in this context, and “top level professional team” is awkwardly phrased. There are also spelling errors such as “compaies,” “shoud,” “affortable,” and “belive.” These do not prevent understanding, but careful proofreading and more natural collocations would improve control. Aim to choose vocabulary that states the intended benefit or outcome specifically.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including the conditional structure “would help them develop” and the inversion “not only would they produce … but also develop.” The sentence beginning “Although private companies play a significant role” also shows an attempt to express a concession before stating your position. Some grammatical errors remain, though meaning is generally clear. For example, “substantial amount of money” needs an article (“a substantial amount”), “Government can also be a better choice” would be more natural with a determiner (“The government”), and “as they does not focus” has a subject–verb agreement error (“it does not” or “they do not”). Review agreement, articles, and consistent reference to government, then proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries.
