IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
There are many medical research projects which are financially supported by private organizations. In my view, research should be conducted by private companies because they have a reputation of completing tasks on time. Additionally, they have several resources such as more capital to invest as well as they may have strong connections with industry partners which can be helpful to complete the project.
Firstly, many medical research has been funded by some companies which are not related to governments. The main reason of this could be that private companies can get a positive feedback when the project would complete. For example, if they got successful in a project which they supported financially, it can increase the company ratings. As a result, they might get support from several stakeholders and businessmen who could invest in that company.
According to my perspective, research should be taken out from private organizations because they are discplined and have strong ties with leading industry partners. Additionally, if the project has long-term benefits, they may spend enough money that can support the research. For instance, private companies can hire individuals which have strong knowledge and skills related to the project. Furthermore, they might pay them higher, and ensure a full-time job in their companies. Consequently, employers will perform better and produce unique results. Overall, it will be beneficial to the success of the project.
In conclusion, many medical research tasks are financially supported by private companies because it could assist in company's long-term success. In my view, if a private organization handles the research then it is a chance that the project might finish on time. Moreover, they have vast resourses which could also play a crucial role in the success of the research.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear: you support private companies conducting medical research, and you give relevant reasons, including their funding, industry connections, ability to hire skilled staff, and potential to complete projects on time. The examples about company ratings and employing knowledgeable researchers help illustrate your view. However, the discussion is only partly developed: the point about positive feedback and attracting investors is not clearly connected to the quality or public value of medical research, and several claims are repeated rather than explored. The task asks you to consider who should carry out research; a brief comparison with government or individual researchers would make your argument more complete. Develop the consequences of your reasons with specific, relevant examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Sequencing phrases such as “Firstly,” “Additionally,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument, and the main position remains consistent. However, progression between ideas is sometimes repetitive: the second body paragraph restates that private organisations are disciplined and well connected, points already made in the introduction. Some links are also unclear, particularly the move from a successful project to improved company ratings and then to investment. Use each paragraph to develop a distinct reason, and make the relationship between claims and their consequences explicit. More precise referencing would also help the reader follow what “they” and “it” refer to.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of vocabulary for the topic, including “financially supported,” “industry partners,” “stakeholders,” and “long-term benefits.” These choices communicate the central ideas, but some expressions are imprecise or do not collocate naturally, such as “get a positive feedback,” “company ratings,” and “research should be taken out from private organizations.” Repetition of “private companies,” “project,” and “support” also limits flexibility. There is a spelling error in “discplined” and another in “resourses.” Aim for more precise academic phrasing and check spelling carefully. For example, describe companies as “funding” or “conducting” research, and explain whether success improves their reputation, attracts investment, or benefits patients.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “if the project has long-term benefits” and clauses explaining results with “which” and “that.” Most sentences remain understandable, and grammatical errors rarely prevent the reader from following your argument. Some errors do affect accuracy, however. In “many medical research has been funded,” the subject requires a different construction, such as “much medical research has been funded.” The conditional “if they got successful … it can increase” shifts tense inconsistently, and “a full-time job in their companies” needs an article or plural adjustment depending on the intended meaning. Review agreement, articles, and consistent verb forms, while continuing to use varied sentence structures.
