Student answer (Band 6.0)

In modern society, several medical research projects are financed by private companies. However, I tend to disagree with this notion. It is paramount that the government should be responsible for providing constant funding for medical research to enhance the well-being of it's citizens.

The government has financial allocations for all areas that partakes the country it governs. The primary aim of every governmental body is to ensure that it's citizens are properly taken care of and that includes medical research. Most of these medical researchs demands alot of resources which only the government has the public money to fund it without being bankrupt. For instance, during the advent of covid-19, most individuals and companies didn't have the capital and labour requirements needed for the medical research to help cure the disease which only the government had.

Citizens normally pay taxes to the government to enable provision of societal needs. Many citizens of different countries experience monthly monetary deductions from their bank accounts. These funds are normally given to the government for the betterment of the country across different sectors. Therefore, the government should utilize these funds properly to enhance the health of its citizens.

In conclusion, the question of whether medical research should be financed by private sectors, individuals or governments is debatable. From my perspective, it is solely the role of the government to provide enough funding for medical research because allocations has already been provided for it. Moreover, the citizens pay taxes every month to aid the government in facilitating their well-being and that includes medical research.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you argue that government should fund medical research, and you give relevant reasons involving public responsibility and tax revenue. The COVID-19 example also helps illustrate the need for substantial resources. However, the task asks you to consider whether research should be carried out by private companies, individuals, or government, and your response focuses almost entirely on government. The claim that only government has the resources is asserted rather than demonstrated, and the COVID-19 example is broad and does not explain how government funding contributed. Develop the comparison by acknowledging possible roles for private firms or individuals, then explain why government should lead or provide the main funding.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs give reasons, and a conclusion restates the position. The progression from government responsibility to tax-funded provision is easy to follow, and linking expressions such as “For instance,” “Therefore,” and “Moreover” help connect points. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent arrangement and shows some features of stronger organisation. However, the two body paragraphs overlap because both mainly argue that government should use public resources for citizens’ welfare. The repeated references to citizens and funding make the development feel somewhat mechanical. Give each paragraph a distinct purpose—for example, one on the scale and coordination of research, and another comparing public funding with private incentives—and use clearer references where needed.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “financial allocations,” “capital and labour requirements,” “societal needs,” and “facilitating their well-being.” These choices show an attempt to use formal and topic-specific language. However, the range is not always controlled naturally: “the areas that partakes the country” is unclear, while “medical researchs” and “alot” contain word-form or spelling problems. Some phrases are also repetitive, particularly “government,” “funding,” and “citizens.” Aim for more precise collocations and vary repeated terms, such as using “public authorities,” “research investment,” or “the population” where appropriate. This would make the argument clearer and more flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the subordinate clause in “to ensure that its citizens are properly taken care of” and the longer sentence beginning “For instance, during the advent of covid-19.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, so errors rarely prevent understanding. Some grammatical problems remain, however. In “areas that partakes,” the verb does not agree with the plural subject; “researchs demands” also has an incorrect plural form and agreement. In “allocations has already been provided,” the verb should agree with the plural noun. Review subject–verb agreement and possessive forms, especially the distinction between “its” and “it’s.” Greater accuracy in these patterns would strengthen control while retaining your sentence variety.
