IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
It is argued that private companies have funded multiple medical research projects. In my opinion, they are the best entity to carry out resarch projects instead of governments or individuals because they can have benefits from it and more than one companies can do it at the same time.
Companies are funding research projects because they want to develop new cure of dieases although it is expensive because they use trail-and-error method to find a cure. Stll they are funded because if research produces good results, companies can develop new medicines based on the findings of research and sell it in markets to earn profits. For instance, Getz is a phramcutical company which produces medicine for diabetic patients, they fund such researches and use them to develop new medicines or impove exisiting medicines, which means the same results with less side-effects.
Other reason why private companies are better than other entities is they can fund multiple researchers projects. On the contary, governments have limited assests and they cannot do it. There are thousands of private companies that exists today. They can either collobrate on one project or work on different projects which increases the scale of projects. For instance, Getz is working on finding cure for diabetic patients, Cinnonman is working pain relief ing medicines, and there are other companies who fund medical researches for other projects. As a result, they are increasingly introducing new medicines in the market and curing many people..
In conculsion, most of medical research projects are funded by private companies, and I believe that are the one who should do the same in the future because it benefits them by increasing their sales and more than one companies can do it which means multiple researches can be carried out at a time.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear: you favour private companies, and both body paragraphs give relevant reasons—profit incentives and the ability to fund several projects. The examples of Getz and other firms help illustrate your points. However, the response addresses the comparison with governments and individuals only partly. You say governments have “limited assets,” but do not explain why individuals are less suitable, and the claim that companies can fund multiple projects is asserted more than demonstrated. The discussion of profit also needs a fuller explanation of how commercial incentives can support reliable research and public health. Develop each reason with clearer explanation and more balanced comparison to address the task more fully.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Linking phrases such as “For instance,” “On the contrary,” and “As a result” make the intended relationships visible. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. “Other reason” does not smoothly signal the second point, and “On the contrary” is not an exact contrast for the claim about government resources. The examples also interrupt the flow slightly because the relationship between each company and the wider argument is not fully explained. Use more precise transitions and clearer referencing, and ensure each paragraph develops one connected line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “research projects,” “findings,” “side-effects,” “profits,” and “scale of projects,” so the main ideas are generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “resarch,” “dieases,” “phramcutical,” and “collobrate.” Some combinations are also unnatural: “develop new cure” and “sell it in markets” do not express the ideas idiomatically. Repeated use of “companies,” “research,” and “medicines” also makes the writing less varied. Build accuracy with common academic collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, use “develop a new treatment” and “bring medicines to market.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “if research produces good results” and a relative clause in “which increases the scale of projects.” These attempts help communicate the argument, but control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make sentences difficult to follow. For example, “more than one companies can do it” has faulty agreement, while “they are the one who should do the same” has a number mismatch. Articles and sentence construction also need attention in phrases such as “develop new cure” and “Other reason why private companies are better … is they can fund.” Practise accurate agreement, articles, and complete clause structures, then proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries.
