IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In recent times, private companies have funded and carried out a lot of medical research projects. For the advancement in medical field in terms of technological improvement and also in medicine, we need to do a lot of research. It doesn't matter whether government , private companies or individuals are doing it, what matters is the research project is for the betterment of human beings and authentic or not
We need a lot of reserch on this field.New diseases are affecting human beings and also other animals. With passing time, they are getting stronger, so we need to keep researching and try to obtain solutions to save as many people as we can.for example covid 19 was one of the prime example. So many people died because of this virus. When we found the antidote, already many people had died.
Government should focus more and provide more funds for advancement in medical research. But sad reality is that government is always short in funding these medical research projects.Thats why private companies chip in and contribute in this field. Many a times individuals who are passionate and wants to contribute do their own research, create research labs with modern equipments. There are occassions when private companies and individuls do it for bussiness purposes and own acheivements.
As long as they are honest with their motives and aim to help humanity and other living beings using authentic ways then its fine. With modern developed medicine and new technology, many people can benefit.Life is the most precious thing to everyone and whoever working hard to help keeping people healthy, its fine to me.
In the end i would say whether government or private companies or any individuals funding and carrying out medical research projects with an honest ambition and following legal ways ,i don't see any problem in that.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
You address the question by arguing that medical research can be conducted by governments, companies, or individuals, provided it is honest and lawful. You also explain why research matters, using COVID-19 as an example, and mention limited government funding and private-sector contributions. However, the task asks which source should carry out the research, and your position that “it doesn't matter” leaves your preference unclear. The discussion of each option is brief, and claims such as governments being “always short in funding” are not supported or qualified. To strengthen the response, state which source should take the leading role, explain why, and develop a specific example showing the benefits or risks of that arrangement.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable overall structure: it introduces the issue, gives reasons for research, discusses possible funders, and ends with a conclusion. The COVID-19 example also gives the discussion a relevant point of reference. However, progression between ideas is sometimes unclear: the opening moves quickly from the importance of research to saying that the source does not matter, while later paragraphs introduce funding shortages and individual laboratories without clearly linking these points to a central argument. Connectors such as “For example,” “That’s why,” and “As long as” help, but some transitions feel abrupt or repetitive. Use clearer topic sentences and organise the body around a consistent position, with each paragraph developing one reason.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “medical research projects,” “advancement,” “funds,” “research labs,” and “motives.” These choices make the subject clear, and phrases such as “help humanity” communicate your values. However, the range is limited and several expressions are imprecise or unnatural, including “the antidote” for the COVID-19 treatment or vaccine, “chip in” in this formal essay, and “own achievements.” Spelling errors such as “reserch,” “occassions,” “individuls,” and “bussiness” are noticeable and reduce accuracy. Aim for more precise academic collocations and check spelling carefully; for example, distinguish between a vaccine, a treatment, and an antidote.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and more extended sentences, including conditional structures such as “As long as they are honest with their motives…” and a concluding sentence that brings together several conditions. However, control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make the relationships between ideas harder to follow. Examples include “what matters is the research project is for,” which needs a clearer clause structure, and “individuals who are passionate and wants,” where the verb does not agree with its subject. There are also missing or misplaced articles and punctuation, as in “covid 19 was one of the prime example” and the run-on sentence beginning “When we found the antidote, already…”. Practise accurate complex clauses, agreement, and sentence boundaries.
