IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In today's age, many medical research projects are financed by private corporations. I believe that the research should be done by government rather than private corporations or entities because that would ensure that there isn't any question about financial gain and the research is being conducted fair and square.

The primary reason for this is that the government funding research projects encourages more students and scientists to participate and conduct research which will consequently be better for the overall population of the world because government is more mainstream and popular than the private companies and individuals. For instance the Pakistan goverments awards scholarships to the students who get admission in research related programs abroad.

Another reason for this is that there are some companies with malicious intent that may influence the research to promote their product or services for the financial gain and this is not good for the people or groups being affected by the research as well as the overall legitmacy of the research. For example medical and pharmaceutical companies finance certain research projects to promote their medicines/drugs which in return becomes profitable for them.

In conclusion, I firmly believe that the goverment funding research is better for the overall population of the world and they should expand their budget for this to encourage more students and save them from the trap and evil intentions of the private corporations, businesses and individuals who are ready to spend a lot of money because in return it helps their companies even more.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you favour government funding over private or individual funding, and you maintain this view in the conclusion. You give two relevant reasons—encouraging participation in research and reducing the risk of commercial bias—and support them with examples involving Pakistani scholarships and pharmaceutical companies. This addresses the task, but the first reason is not fully explained: scholarships for students studying abroad do not clearly show how government funding of medical research itself improves participation or outcomes. The claim that government is “more mainstream and popular” also needs clarification. To strengthen the response, explain how public funding can set research priorities or make findings accessible, and develop the examples more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and a conclusion restates your position. Signposting such as “The primary reason,” “Another reason,” and “In conclusion” makes the progression easy to follow. However, the links between some claims and their examples are not always clear. In particular, the scholarship example does not directly demonstrate the effect of funding medical research, and the second body paragraph moves quickly from possible company motives to the impact on legitimacy. Some linking phrases also feel formulaic. Make the relationship between each reason and its evidence explicit, and use pronouns or transitions to connect ideas more naturally.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “financial gain,” “malicious intent,” “legitimacy,” and “pharmaceutical companies,” and the reader can understand your main argument. However, the range and precision are uneven, with several awkward or inaccurate choices: “government is more mainstream and popular,” “conducted fair and square,” and “save them from the trap and evil intentions” are not natural academic expressions. There are also spelling errors such as “goverments” and “legitmacy,” alongside repeated use of “research,” “companies,” and “overall population.” Aim for precise collocations and a more formal register, and check spelling carefully. This would make your ideas sound clearer and more controlled.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause beginning “because” and a relative clause in “companies with malicious intent that may influence the research.” Most sentences remain understandable, and grammatical errors do not generally prevent the reader from following your position. Some sentence structures, however, are awkward or difficult to control. For example, “the government funding research projects encourages” has an unclear subject construction, while “because government is more mainstream” is missing a determiner before “government.” The final sentence is long and contains several linked ideas, making its structure harder to follow. Practise building complex sentences around one clear main clause, and check agreement, articles, and punctuation.
