Student answer (Band 6.0)

In this modern era, with the advancements of science and technology, the awareness regarding new disease is becoming more popular and as a cure for most of the scariest or incuarable diseases having an ongoing research is essential. In my opinion, medical research or projects should be should be funded by government rather than private companies or individuals as it can be misused in many ways and it is also difficult for everyone to access the huge financial burden levied by private companies.

On the contrary, some people think that participating in private medical research projects are more beneficial because it is accessible by people who is more financially secured. The follow-up care and services are more satisfiable and organised when it is conducted by private companies. As an example, we have heard about famous celebrities being the research participants of private firms were they get luxirious care and treatment.

However, I still believe that promoting government funded projects are very essential. It is very much economical and accessible to all levels of society compared to the other. As a result, more people access these resources and there will cure of some of the fatal diseases like cancer or SLE. For example, stem cell therapy for cancer is still evolving which requires a huge money to bank cord blood cells and for treatment. If this is carried out by government projects, it can be used for treatment of many diseases.

Furthermore, the level of care being misused can be prevented to an extend. Care should be provided to the ones that are in immediate needs, not based on the status. Also, having a structured government monitored research projects helps in keeping the study less biased. In addition to that, we have read about medications being prescribed to people to help the pharmaceutical companies without the knowledge of individuals being a part of the study. These things can be controlled to an extend with government funded projects.

In conclusion, I largerly agree to the point that government funded medical research projects should be promoted compared to individual or private projects inorder to avoid the bias and medical discripencies, so that we can build a better future together with healthy individuals.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your position is clear throughout: you argue that governments should fund medical research, and you address the alternatives by acknowledging the perceived benefits of private projects. The response also gives relevant reasons, including affordability, access, oversight and the risk of commercial bias, with examples such as cancer research and stem-cell therapy. This meets the task well. To strengthen the development further, explain more precisely how public funding would make a particular treatment accessible or how government oversight would prevent the specific misconduct you describe. Some claims, such as that public research could lead to cures for fatal diseases, are broad and would benefit from qualification or more concrete support. Overall, the main ideas are relevant and supported, though not all are developed with equal precision.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The essay has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, the body paragraphs consider private research and then develop the case for government funding, and the conclusion restates your position. Linking expressions such as “However,” “Furthermore” and “In addition to that” help signal the progression. This is coherent, and the paragraphing is generally appropriate. Some connections are less clear, however: “On the contrary” introduces an opposing view, but the relationship to the preceding point is not quite accurate, and “As a result” does not clearly show how the preceding claim leads to the stated outcome. References such as “the other” are also vague. More precise transitions and clearer links between each reason and its example would make the progression smoother and less formulaic.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “financial burden,” “fatal diseases,” “biased” and “pharmaceutical companies,” which helps communicate the subject. However, inaccurate word choice, collocation and spelling are noticeable and sometimes make the reader pause. Examples include “awareness regarding new disease is becoming more popular,” “more satisfiable,” “luxirious care,” “medical discripencies” and “inorder.” Some expressions are also imprecise, such as “the level of care being misused” and “bank cord blood cells.” Aim for accurate, natural combinations rather than more elaborate wording: for instance, describe awareness as “increasing,” care as “more satisfactory,” and research as “storing cord blood” where appropriate. Proofreading spelling and checking unfamiliar terms would improve clarity and control.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “because,” “when” and “which,” and most of the argument remains understandable. However, attempts at longer structures are often faulty, and errors recur in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction. For example, “people who is more financially secured” has a subject–verb agreement problem, while “there will cure of some” is missing a grammatical structure needed to express the result. The opening also repeats “should be,” and “having an ongoing research is essential” is awkwardly formed. Practise building complex sentences around a clear subject and verb, then check agreement and articles. Greater accuracy in these patterns would make your reasoning easier to follow.
