Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response shows an emerging position: it says, “This essay disagrees” and later suggests that government should protect and carry out medical research. However, the position is difficult to interpret because the opening also says research should be “carried by private companies,” and the discussion stops before giving a complete reason or example. The task asks you to choose among private companies, individuals, or government and support that choice; these parts are only minimally addressed, so the reader cannot see a developed argument. The response is also substantially below the required 250 words: it contains 67 words, with 9 words copied from the prompt excluded. State your choice clearly, explain at least two relevant reasons, and support them with specific examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic attempt to organise the response: an opening paragraph previews a discussion and a second paragraph begins with “To begin with.” This gives the reader a limited sense of direction. However, the promised structure is not completed, and the second paragraph ends mid-thought at “but the most notable,” so there is no developed progression or conclusion. The opening’s claims about disagreeing with private funding and supporting government research also conflict, making the line of argument hard to follow. Use separate paragraphs for your position, each supporting reason, and the conclusion; ensure each paragraph develops one complete idea. Linking phrases should connect actual points rather than announce sections that are not subsequently written.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response includes some topic-related vocabulary, such as “medical research projects,” “private companies,” “potential negative impact,” and “supporting arguments.” These choices show awareness of the subject and provide a starting point for discussing funding. However, the range is narrow, and several phrases are inaccurate or unclear, including “individuals medical research are bad for this” and “proper carring this projects.” The word “assay” is also not an appropriate substitute for “essay,” and “funded” is repeated from the prompt without further precise terminology. Build a more accurate range around ideas such as public funding, commercial interests, clinical trials, and access to treatment, and check spelling and collocations so your intended meaning is clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.0
You attempt more than simple statements, including a future-oriented preview (“The essay will first discuss…”) and a subordinate clause beginning “why.” However, control is weak: “believes that carried by private companies” lacks a complete grammatical structure, while “why we should government medical research projects are protect” combines incompatible patterns. The sentence beginning “The essay will first discuss” also becomes difficult to follow because its clauses do not connect clearly. Punctuation and sentence boundaries need attention: there is no space after the full stop in “companies. This,” and the final paragraph contains a full stop followed by a lower-case “but” and an unfinished clause. Practise complete subject–verb sentences and check each sentence for a clear main clause before adding complex structures.
