IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
These days numerous medical research projects are financially supported by private corporations. However, I am of the opinion that such research projects should be funded by the goverment. This is mainly due to the facilities and credibility that comes with the association. Along with this, the problems relating to finance is also at lower risk.
Government funded projects provide medical researchers with a variety of facilities. For instance, one has access to proper medical clinics and laboratories where they can makes observations and conduct experiments. On the other hand, private companies are self-funding corporations. Therefore, they cannot provide the same level of facilities that the facilities that the governing authorities can provide. For example, the medical professionals were able to create the COVID-19 vaccine mainly because this project was sponsored by the government, hence they had all the necessary equipment. Along with this, support from the state also opens door of credibility. People are more likely to trust government funded projects as compared to projects that were carried out individually or were funded by a private corporation. For example: the COVID-19 vaccine was trusted by the public mainly due to the fact that it was a government funded medical research project.
State sponsored projects are less likely to face any kind of financial risk as compared to those projects that are funded by private companies. Private businesses can halt the funding at any time if they face situations like bankruptcy or legal consequences. This can cause the medical project to be left incomplete. Another problem is that such organization provide particial funding. Therefore, the researcher cannot properly go through with his observations and experiments due to all the financial and mental burden he is carrying.
Overall, in my persperctive, the state should be responsible for sponsoring medical research projects because of the convenience it provides in terms of facilities, and due the security it provides for the project's finance.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction: you argue that governments should fund medical research, and the conclusion restates this view. You give relevant reasons—access to facilities, public credibility and greater financial security—and support them with examples related to COVID-19 vaccine research. This covers the task, and the explanation of how private funding might stop is particularly relevant. However, the facilities and credibility points overlap somewhat in their vaccine example, and the claim that private companies cannot provide comparable facilities is asserted rather than demonstrated. The point about partial funding and researchers’ burden is also introduced but not fully explained. Develop each reason with a distinct, specific explanation to make the argument more consistently convincing.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs organised around reasons, and a concluding statement. Ideas generally progress logically, and linking expressions such as “For instance,” “On the other hand,” and “Along with this” help show relationships. The organisation is effective, though some connections feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “Along with this” and “For example.” The two COVID-19 references also make the first body paragraph feel repetitive rather than progressively developed. In the second body paragraph, the move from funding being halted to partial funding is understandable but could be linked more explicitly. Use a wider range of transitions and clearer referencing, and ensure each paragraph develops a distinct line of reasoning.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “medical research projects,” “conduct experiments,” “financial risk,” and “bankruptcy.” These choices make the main ideas clear, and you attempt more formal expressions such as “state sponsored projects.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “opens door of credibility,” “partial funding,” and “mental burden” do not express the intended ideas precisely. There are also spelling errors, including “goverment,” “persperctive,” and “particial.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce accuracy and control. Build precision by checking spelling and learning common academic collocations, especially for describing public trust, research facilities and funding continuity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect structures such as “This can cause the medical project to be left incomplete” and a conditional clause beginning “if they face situations like bankruptcy.” Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the problems relating to finance is” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “where they can makes observations” uses the wrong verb form. The sentence “the facilities that the facilities that the governing authorities can provide” contains an unnecessary repetition that disrupts the structure. There are also article and plural-pattern issues in “opens door.” Review agreement, verb forms after modal verbs, and sentence editing; greater accuracy across these structures would strengthen the response.
