IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent times, the funding of medical research become a seriouse issue, which is mostly facilitated by some private companies or some of the individuals. I truly believe that government should play important role in this matter because life is more important than the big profits.

I firmly believe that the government is primarily responsible for safeguarding the health and well-being of its citizens. Government should put their fully focus and put their best work in this niche because medical research is one of the major thing in today's world, It can save a town, country or a world from a very big disease. If a Individual or a private comapny will fund these kinds of projects so in this case 2 major negative things can be happen first those individuals and companies will feel alot of financial pressure after some month and secondly after some time if some Funder pull backs during the research on some major disease so it will create a alot of problem not just for the research team but also for those people who are fighting with that disease. For example, during the COVID-19 pandemic, governments around the world invested large amounts of money in medical research to develop vaccines and protect people's lives. This shows how government funding can play a crucial role in improving public health. But on the other hand some of the countries truly rely on private funding which I think should be stopped and the government should set a special budget ever year for these kind of important things so that health sector can get better.

Conculsion:

Although the individuals and private companies invest alot on these kind of important research But I will truly appreciate the government if they will take this responsibility.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you believe government should take primary responsibility because public health matters more than profit. You support this with relevant points about the risks of private funders withdrawing and with the COVID-19 vaccine example, so the response addresses the central question. However, the task asks you to consider whether research should be funded by private companies, individuals, or government, and the discussion of individuals is brief; the claim that private funding “should be stopped” is also asserted rather than fully justified. Develop the comparison by explaining what private or individual funding can contribute, then show why government funding should lead or provide safeguards. This would make the reasoning more balanced and the supporting ideas more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction states your view, a main paragraph gives reasons and an example, and a conclusion restates your position. The COVID-19 example is placed appropriately after the point about public responsibility. However, most of the argument is packed into one long paragraph, and the progression becomes difficult to follow when several claims are joined together. Transitions such as “But on the other hand” do not clearly connect the contrast, since the preceding point is not developed as a distinct opposing view. Use separate paragraphs for the government case and the comparison with private funding, and make each paragraph follow a clear point–explanation–example sequence. This will reduce the reliance on repeated linking phrases and improve the overall progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “safeguarding,” “financial pressure,” “funding,” and “public health,” and the reader can generally understand your position. However, the range is limited by repeated general expressions such as “important,” “these kinds of,” and “a lot,” while several word choices or spellings are inaccurate, including “seriouse,” “comapny,” and “Conculsion.” Some phrases are also unnatural, for example “put their fully focus” and “a very big disease.” Aim for more precise language about research funding, such as “allocate public funds,” “withdraw financial support,” and “conduct medical trials.” Check spelling and collocations carefully so that your vocabulary communicates ideas more naturally and precisely.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional reasoning about what might happen if a funder withdraws and a relative clause in “which I think should be stopped.” These attempts show some range, but errors in verb forms, agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries are frequent enough to make parts of the argument harder to read. For example, “the funding … become” needs a past or present-perfect form, “Government should put their” has a subject–pronoun agreement problem, and “2 major negative things can be happen” has an incorrect verb construction. Long sentences also need clearer punctuation. Practise accurate conditional patterns and divide multi-claim sentences into shorter units; this will help you retain complex ideas while improving control.
