Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Medical research funded by private companies, individuals and government is acceptable but only in proper supervision. Medical reearch is critical and includes operations, subjects and decision which requires correct and strict supervision. As it can be hazardous to mankind, animals and plants. Keeping in mind the welfare of mankind, signing the contracts and taking oaths should be a requirement before doing any of such researches. For example, If one is deciding to do a research on functional food, foods which contains medicinal benefits in addition to nutrition. These kind of researches include gene editing, adding and removing of DNA from organisms who are the sources of food (i;e, plants and animals) and then growing these GMOs (genetically modified organisms) in a controlled environmrnts. Then the food comes from these GMOs are tested on humans with diseases in a controlled environments. These researches requires strict supervisions. It is not ethically right for anyone to do these kind of work without having legal approaches.

There are many researches on agricalture where seedless fruits especially citrus have developed using biotechnology. These fruits are appealing to eat and are more flavourful but there is a drawback. If there is no seed how will farmers grow them again? The solution to this question is that the country will import seeds but that is not always applicable in a long run because this will cause inflation, unnecessary taxes which will make seeds inaccessibe to local farmers.

In conclusion, Every research related to health, nutrition and environment should be done under supervision of concerned and should always be in favour of human welfare.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You express a general view that medical research should be supervised and serve human welfare, and the examples about genetically modified food and seedless fruit are relevant to research’s possible effects. However, the question asks you to choose or compare private companies, individuals, and government as the bodies that should conduct research. Your response does not make that choice clear: “funded by private companies, individuals and government is acceptable” is followed by a focus on supervision rather than who should lead or fund it. The examples also receive more detail than your central argument, and the consequences for farmers are not clearly connected to your position. State a direct preference and explain why the other options are less suitable.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the examples give it some overall shape. However, progression is difficult to follow because the main argument is not established before the examples begin. The first paragraph moves from supervision to contracts, gene editing, food testing and legal approaches, while the second shifts to seedless fruit and imports without clearly linking this example to who should conduct research. Some connections are also awkward or unclear, such as “Then the food comes from these GMOs are tested.” Use each paragraph to develop one reason supporting a clear position, and add explicit links explaining how each example supports that reason.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “gene editing,” “genetically modified organisms,” “biotechnology,” “inflation” and “local farmers.” These terms help communicate the subject and show attempts to use less common language. However, several word-choice, spelling and collocation errors reduce precision: “agricalture,” “environmrnts” and “inaccessibe” are misspelled, while “strict supervisions” and “legal approaches” are not natural choices in context. “Functional food” is introduced but not explained smoothly. Proofread technical terms and choose more precise combinations, such as “strict oversight,” “legal safeguards” and “research into agriculture.” This would make the vocabulary more controlled without requiring more complicated wording.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex structures, including conditional forms such as “If there is no seed how will farmers grow them again?” and clauses beginning “because.” Meaning is generally recoverable, but some sentence structures and agreement patterns are inaccurate. For example, “decision which requires” needs a plural verb if it refers to “operations, subjects and decision,” and “These researches requires” has a subject–verb agreement error. “As it can be hazardous…” is a sentence fragment, while “the food comes from these GMOs are tested” combines clauses incorrectly. Work on complete sentence construction, agreement, and articles, and punctuate introductory clauses and questions consistently. More accurate control of these patterns would improve clarity.
