IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

In recent times, higher number of research projects are funded by private companies instead of individual or goverment funded. The increase in these private investments is due to the rising interest of independent organizations in the field of medical sciences or related sectors. In my opinion, research related to medical or related sciences should be financed by the goverment rather than an individual or a private institution.

On the one hand, it is observed that research carried by private firms are proving to be increasingly effective due to the fact that companies have the resources to fund long-term research projects. Organizations funding these projects usually have a strong backing or a source of income in which they can rely on in case the research failed to produce results. This in-turn provides researchers with the neccessary amount of time to develop new treatments, improve patient outcomes and treat diseases.

On the other hand, goverment financed research projects are important due to the fact that it regulates medical research and ensures ethical compliance is carried. Goverment has the power to hold intellectual institutions accountable on the case of ineffective or dangerous research. Moreover, goverment conducted researche projects protect the interests of patients instead of commercializing medical practices. For example, drugs produced using the results of public funded research will be safe to use and cost less in comparison to private medicines.

In my opinion, goverment conducted research are preferable over projects financed by private institutions or individuals because of the regulatory practices carried out in a state-funded scientific research.

In conclusion, although industry-funded research projects have long term advantages, goverment's investment in research projects have proper regulations and are conducted in the interest of the public.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you favour government funding, and you address the comparison with private companies and individuals. The discussion of private firms’ resources and capacity to support long-term projects is relevant, while the points about regulation, accountability and patient interests explain your preference. However, these ideas are not developed equally. The private-funding paragraph mainly asserts that companies can sustain research, without a concrete example or consideration of possible drawbacks. The claim that publicly funded research will produce safer, cheaper drugs also needs qualification or support. To strengthen the response, explain how government oversight works in practice and give a specific example, while developing the role of individuals more directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs, a stated opinion and a conclusion. Transitions such as “On the one hand,” “On the other hand,” and “In conclusion” make the main direction easy to follow. However, cohesion is sometimes mechanical because the paragraphs rely heavily on repeated framing such as “due to the fact that,” and the final opinion largely repeats the introduction rather than advancing the argument. Some references are also unclear: “it regulates medical research” follows “government financed research projects,” so the pronoun’s intended reference is uncertain. Use more varied links between claims and examples, and make each paragraph progress from a clear point to explanation and evidence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “long-term research projects,” “ethical compliance,” “patient outcomes,” and “commercializing medical practices,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, but several word-choice and collocation problems reduce precision: “higher number of research projects,” “strong backing or a source of income in which they can rely,” and “government conducted research” are not natural formulations. Spelling errors such as “goverment,” “neccessary,” and “researche” are noticeable. Build accuracy by learning common academic collocations and checking spelling carefully; for example, use “a growing number,” “rely on,” and “government-funded research.” This would make the vocabulary more controlled and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “due to the fact that” and “although,” and the main meaning is generally clear. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with agreement and sentence construction. For example, “research carried by private firms are proving” has a singular subject with a plural verb, while “government conducted research are preferable” has the same agreement problem. In “ensures ethical compliance is carried,” the clause is incomplete or awkwardly formed; “ensures that ethical standards are followed” would be clearer. There are also article and preposition-pattern issues, as in “on the case of.” Practise checking subject–verb agreement and forming subordinate clauses accurately, while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
