IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
In recent times large portion related to medical studies are sponsored by private sector. I believe that research should be manage by government because it focus on long term results like disease that is not very rare and not profit able it can be done by the government because which disease that is not profitable is not done by private sector because they work on researches that is profit driven.
One of the main reason why i think that government should be sponsor of medical researches because government work on public interest diseases that is very rare such as genetic disorder these diseases are not as much profit driven because these disease has not a large number of patients, if these types of disease are not research by government than these disorders are not cure as soon as possible because private sectors work only the projects that is profitable as well as research complete as soon as possible they have a lot of investment on a research so they want that they get back their money as early as possible and illness like genetic disorder require a lot of research so think it must be done by government.
In conclusion think that the disease that is not very rare is searched by private sector because they work fast and result driven projects while the research on a disease that is that require long researches and time that is done by government because it is possible that these researches ended on without any result.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear: you argue that government should fund research, particularly for conditions that are unlikely to attract commercial investment. The example of rare genetic disorders is relevant and helps explain the public-interest case. However, the response only partly addresses the choice in the prompt: it discusses government and private companies, but does not consider research funded by individuals. The distinction between diseases that are “not very rare” and those requiring long research is also not fully explained, and the conclusion introduces this contrast without developing it. To strengthen the response, address all three possible funders and support your position with a more specific example or clearer explanation of how public funding benefits patients.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an opening position, a supporting paragraph and a conclusion. The central idea—private companies prioritise profitable projects while governments can support neglected research—can be followed throughout. However, progression is limited because the main supporting paragraph contains several ideas in one long sequence, and the conclusion largely repeats the opening rather than drawing the argument together. Linking phrases such as “because” and “as well as” are repeated and sometimes make relationships between points unclear. Organise the explanation into shorter, focused sentences and use clearer transitions to show cause, contrast and consequence. A separate point addressing individual funding would also make the overall progression more complete.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “medical research,” “private sector,” “genetic disorder,” “profitable” and “investment,” so the reader can understand the subject and your main argument. There are also attempts to express more specific ideas, such as research being “profit driven.” However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive: “researches” is used where “research” is needed, and “public interest diseases” does not clearly express the intended meaning. Phrases such as “not profit able” and “research on a disease” also need more natural forms. Build a wider set of precise expressions for funding priorities and neglected conditions, and check spelling and word forms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to connect ideas in complex sentences, especially when explaining why private companies may avoid research into rare disorders. However, these longer structures are often faulty, and errors can make the argument difficult to follow. For example, “research should be manage by government” has an incorrect verb form, while “because which disease that is not profitable” has an unclear clause structure. There are also recurring problems with articles, agreement and sentence boundaries, as in “One of the main reason” and the long opening sentence. Use shorter, complete sentences first, then add subordinate clauses with accurate forms. Check subject–verb agreement, articles and punctuation when revising.
