Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
The response takes a position in favour of government funding and gives relevant examples from biotechnology, agriculture and medicine, including DNA research, penicillin and golden rice. These examples show an attempt to support the main view. However, the task asks you to consider whether research should be carried out by private companies, individuals or government, and the response focuses almost entirely on government support. It does not explain the roles or limitations of private companies and individuals, so the comparison is incomplete. Several points, such as the benefits of genetic engineering, are named but not clearly explained or linked to why government is the best funder. The response is also 23 words below the required minimum. Develop the comparison and explain each example’s relevance to your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is a recognisable central position—government should support research—and the response groups some related examples together, such as biotechnology and pharmaceutical research. However, the ideas are not arranged into a clear progression: the opening is difficult to follow, and the body moves from general government funding to DNA history, then to penicillin and agricultural examples without clear links. Connectors such as “furthermore,” “in additionally” and “for example” are attempted, but they do not consistently show the relationship between ideas. Paragraphing is also limited, with the final section appearing as one long, unfinished block. Use a clear introduction, separate body paragraphs for distinct reasons, and a conclusion; make each paragraph develop one point in a logical order.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
The response attempts topic-specific vocabulary, including “genetic engineering,” “biotechnology,” “vaccinations,” “food security” and “DNA recombinant technology.” This gives the reader some sense of the subject and shows an effort to use less common terms. However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or unclear, as in “clinical exploration supports through commercial institutions,” “conflict and tolerance diseases,” and “financial support to scientist institution.” Some expressions appear to be direct translations and make the intended meaning difficult to identify. Spelling and word forms also need attention, including “offcourse” and “frezan.” Build a reliable set of research-related collocations and check that each technical term is used accurately in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts some longer structures, including clauses linked with “which” and “for example,” but control is weak and many sentences are difficult to parse. For instance, “public authorities provides financial support” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “which first antibiotic in history” lacks a complete verb structure. Articles, plurals and sentence boundaries are also frequently missing or inaccurate, as in “supports investigation scientific plans” and the long sentence beginning “it vast field in science.” These problems sometimes obscure the relationships between ideas. Practise building accurate simple sentences first, then combine them with controlled relative clauses and conjunctions. Use full stops to separate complete ideas and check agreement, articles and verb forms during editing.
