Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
people have different views about wether medical research should be carried by private companies individuals or government, Although both views have their merits, I partly tend to the government research.
on the one hand some people give thier trust to private companies in terms of medical reasearch, the main reason for this could be the advertising used by these companies to gain people trust, by attracting celebrities to use their products and as a result they get all the audience intrest, therefore many rich individuals want to invest their money in many fields and medical is one of them for sure, for example if a wealthy person want to double hes money through investing, then all hes sight will be aiming at privat companies and as an outcome private companies will receive a competitive funding.
on the other hand other argue that govenrment should be the one who carry the medical research, the main reason for this is that, government frequent organizations in many fields and the total authority and the competitive prices, for instace all the local products funded by the government is cheap and less expensive than the private products, I find this view more convincing because of all the previous reasons.
in conclusion, Although many people tend to private medical comapnies research, I believe that government is the one who should carry all the research due to it authority and organization experiences and it prioritie to well serve it people through low prices products and high quality standards.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You give a position—“I partly tend to the government research”—and the conclusion makes your preference for government clearer. However, the discussion only partially answers the choice among private companies, individuals and government: individuals are mentioned mainly as investors, without a developed comparison, and the reasons for government funding (“authority and organization experiences”) are not clearly explained. The example about cheaper local products does not establish how government research would improve medical outcomes or quality. Your ideas therefore remain limited and under-developed. The response is also 9 words below the 250-word minimum; the 10 words copied from the task prompt were not counted. To strengthen the response, state your position precisely and develop relevant examples showing why one funding model is preferable.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two contrasting body paragraphs beginning “on the one hand” and “on the other hand,” and a conclusion. This helps the reader identify the broad direction of your argument. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes unclear. In the first body paragraph, advertising, celebrity endorsements, wealthy investors and competitive funding are linked without explaining how each supports the point. The second paragraph also moves from government authority to low prices without a clear connection to medical research. Linking phrases such as “therefore” and “as a result” are used, but some relationships are not fully logical. Make each paragraph develop one main claim, then use clear references and transitions to connect its explanation and example.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “medical research,” “invest,” “competitive funding,” “authority” and “quality standards,” so the reader can follow the general subject. However, the range is limited and several spelling and word-choice errors make the writing less clear, such as “wether,” “reasearch,” “intrest” and “comapnies.” Some phrases are also unnatural or imprecise: “give their trust to private companies,” “all hes sight will be aiming at” and “government frequent organizations” do not express the intended ideas clearly. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and more precise terms for funding and research. Proofreading spelling and choosing vocabulary that directly describes the relationship between government funding, research priorities and public benefit would improve clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt some longer sentences using clauses and connectors, for example, “the main reason for this could be …, and as a result …,” and you use a basic contrast structure across the essay. However, the range is limited, and complex sentences are often faulty or difficult to follow. The opening joins two independent clauses with a comma: “..., Although both views have their merits...” The sentence beginning “the main reason for this is that” does not form a clear grammatical continuation, and the conclusion contains several problems with articles, agreement and possessives. Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent. Practise building shorter, complete sentences first, then combine ideas with accurate subordinate clauses; check subject–verb agreement, articles and sentence boundaries during revision.
