IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The research in medical science is rapidly expanding because of its never ending advantages. The research in this field requires multiple resources such as, dataset, computers and most significantly financial support. The financial assistance is usually provided by private companies, people or government. According to my perception, individuals and companies who are not associated with government should be allowed to fund medical research in order to relieve pressure from the economy.

Medical science is a vast field of study comprising several sub-fields offering ample opportunities for researchers. Most of the private companies provide funds to the researcher to find the solutions to deal with real life challenges. These solution and findings are further used to overcome the problems as well as to generate revenue for the company. For instance, The dataset created to identify the pattern of various cancer cells can be utilized by the phramacutical companies for development of medicines.

Similarly, the goal of universities all over world is to come up with innovative ideas and findings in health care that can be proved beneficial for living beings. To achieve this many professors has established fully equiped labortories to support their students. They hire students for full-time research work in their laboritories just like any other corporate office. Therefore, a number of individuals and companies keep their innovative work hidden or offer its services at high prices.

The governments of majority of the countries allocate a shared from their annual budgets to health care research. The purpose of this allocation is to make new inventions and ideas accessible to general public. However, this demands a vital amount of finances, and its outcome will be a burden on the government. Permitting private companies or individuals to offer helping hand to the people interested in research will be profitable for both the provider and public.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you support funding from individuals and private companies, partly to reduce pressure on government finances. You also discuss the roles of companies, universities and governments, and the cancer-research example is relevant. This addresses the main question, but the comparison between the possible funders is not fully developed. For example, you explain how private funding may benefit companies, yet do not clearly weigh its advantages and risks against government funding or explain the role individuals could play. The point that private support can make research “profitable for both the provider and public” needs more explanation, especially how public access would be protected. Develop these comparisons and support your position with more specific reasoning to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable overall structure: an introduction, paragraphs about private research and universities, and a final paragraph on government funding. Linking expressions such as “Similarly,” “Therefore,” and “However” help signal relationships between ideas. However, progression is not always clear within the body paragraphs. The paragraph beginning “Similarly” shifts from universities’ research aims to laboratories, student employment, and then private work being hidden or expensive; the connection between these points needs to be made explicit. The final paragraph also introduces the proposed solution without clearly summarising the comparison. Organise each paragraph around one main claim, then explain and illustrate it, and use clearer references when moving between universities, individuals, companies, and government.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonably varied range of topic vocabulary, including “financial assistance,” “innovative ideas,” “annual budgets,” and “accessible to general public.” These choices communicate the subject clearly, and some less common terms are attempted. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “a shared from their annual budgets,” “offer helping hand,” and “real life challenges.” There are also spelling errors in “phramacutical,” “equiped,” and “labortories,” which reduce precision. Aim for more natural academic combinations and check spelling carefully. For instance, describe governments as allocating “a share of their annual budgets,” and use “provide a helping hand” or, more formally, “provide support.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including subordinate clauses such as “because of its never ending advantages” and “in order to relieve pressure from the economy.” Most ideas remain understandable, and the sentence structures show some range. There are, however, some errors in agreement, articles, plurals, and sentence construction. For example, “These solution and findings” should use a plural noun, while “many professors has established” has a subject–verb agreement error. In “The purpose of this allocation is to make new inventions and ideas accessible to general public,” an article is needed before “general public.” Review agreement and article use, and proofread longer sentences to ensure each clause is grammatically complete.
