Student answer (Band 5.5)

i think medical research projects should be funded by goverments because of better check and balance by goverment, there should be proper clinical trials and randomized controlled study and safety should be ensured by organizations like FDA and relevant authorites for the betterment of people, funding by private companies and individuals can have negative impact because of personal agendas and so on.There are certain trust issues revolving individuals or private companies doing funding for medical research projects, one example is bill gates releasing gas in the stratosphere to cool the planet and reduce global warming, people turned it into a conspiracy theory that they are releasing gases in our atmosphere and making artificial rains without our consent because increase in rainfall can damage agriculture and ruin crops, People even said that they are trying to minimize the worlds population by creating a famine and shortage of food , So these kind of private or individual funding for medical research projects can create conflict and media can manipulate people viewpoints for their own viewership or profits. These kind of medical research projects should be funded by goverment and should be done for the betterment of people or advancement of science so the world can benefit from it. the medical research projects that are funded by the goverment usually have all their data available to the public which creates transparency between goverment and public for further research and study which helps many expert opinions to clarify or correct any mistakes in the research.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you argue that governments should fund medical research because they can provide oversight, protect public safety and make findings transparent. The references to clinical trials, the FDA and public access to research data are relevant reasons. However, the response only partly develops the comparison requested between government, private companies and individuals. The Bill Gates example focuses on public suspicion about geoengineering rather than medical research, so its relevance to the task is indirect, and the claims about conspiracy theories and famine are not supported with evidence. To strengthen the response, explain more directly how government funding safeguards medical studies, and acknowledge a possible benefit of private funding before explaining why government oversight should remain central.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a recognisable progression from your position, to concerns about private funding, and then to the benefits of government transparency. However, it is presented as one long paragraph, making the stages of the argument difficult to distinguish. Several ideas are joined in extended sentences, particularly the discussion of the Bill Gates example, which moves from public distrust to rainfall, agriculture and population claims without clear transitions. Repeated phrases such as “these kind of” and repeated references to government funding also make the flow feel repetitive. Use separate paragraphs for your position, supporting reasons and conclusion, and guide the reader with clear links such as “Moreover” or “In contrast.”

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “clinical trials,” “randomized controlled study,” “transparency” and “advancement of science.” These terms help communicate your main concerns about safety and accountability. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “personal agendas” and “viewership,” although some choices are imprecise or awkward in context: “better check and balance” and “releasing gas” do not express the intended ideas naturally. Spelling and word-form errors, including “goverments,” “authorites” and “viewpoints,” are noticeable but do not prevent the reader from understanding the argument. Aim for more precise collocations and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt to connect several ideas using clauses and conjunctions, and the overall meaning is generally understandable. However, sentence structures are often long and difficult to control; the opening sentence, for example, strings together reasons and examples without clear sentence boundaries. There are recurring issues with agreement and number, as in “these kind of,” and with articles and sentence construction, including “by goverment.” Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent: the response begins with lowercase “i,” and several full ideas run together without appropriate stops. Use shorter, complete sentences alongside complex ones, and check agreement, articles and punctuation during revision.
