IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
These days, a significant number of research projects related to healthcare are sponsered by private organizations. In my opinion, research should not be limited to private companies only. Medical related research should be conducted by everyone including government, private sectors, and individuals as long as they have resources.
At the present time, most of the medical research is funded by private sector. Some private companies have limited resources, they can not dedicate a bigger budget to the projects which need a large sum of money. If government gets involve in the funding of research, many health related questions or problems could be solved in shorter duration. A significant number of lives can be saved if details about some particular disease are achieved early. COVID-19 is the best example of this, it shows how early and fast research is crusial to save humanity.
Sometimes, large data is required from different people according to specific health conditions and fectors. People do not provide data or answer a particular questionaire, even if it takes just a few minutes because they have trust issues with private companies. When the same survey is conducted by government, people do not hesitate to provide information. Here the role of government is prominent.
In conclusion, I would say everyone should be involved in research as much as they can. It is a human obligation and the responsibility of everyone to facilitate the medical research for the betterment of the mankind. It can be done in any form, wether by providing direct funding or by facilitating the process.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: medical research should involve government, private companies and individuals, rather than being restricted to private firms. You support this with relevant points about public funding helping large projects and people being more willing to share health data with government. The COVID-19 example also connects to the importance of timely research. This addresses the task, but the discussion is uneven: the role of private companies and individuals is stated in the introduction and conclusion, yet their specific contributions are not explained. The claim that government funding would solve health problems more quickly also needs a clearer explanation or example. Develop each party’s role and support the main claims more precisely.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure, moving from your position to two supporting paragraphs and a conclusion. Each body paragraph has a recognisable focus, and phrases such as “If government gets involve” and “Here the role of government is prominent” help connect examples to the argument. The progression is generally easy to follow, though some links between claims are abrupt: the discussion moves from limited company budgets to faster solutions without fully explaining the connection. “At the present time” also repeats the time framing introduced in the opening. To strengthen cohesion, make the cause-and-effect links explicit and use referencing carefully so that each point clearly builds on the previous one.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic vocabulary, including “healthcare,” “funding,” “health conditions,” “survey,” and “facilitating the process.” Phrases such as “a significant number of lives” and “the role of government is prominent” show attempts to express ideas beyond basic vocabulary. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, such as “large data,” “details … are achieved,” and “research … is crucial to save humanity.” There are also spelling errors, including “sponsered,” “crusial,” “fectors,” and “wether.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Choose more natural academic combinations and proofread spelling; for example, refer to “large amounts of data” and “obtain information about a disease.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional structures such as “If government gets involve in the funding …, many … problems could be solved” and a subordinate clause beginning “even if.” Meaning remains clear overall, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “Some private companies have limited resources, they can not…” joins two independent clauses with a comma; use a full stop or a conjunction. In “If government gets involve,” the verb form should be “gets involved,” and “most of the medical research” would usually take “is” only when treated as a singular mass noun. There are also issues with articles and number, such as “a particular questionaire” and “large data.” Review clause boundaries, verb forms and countable versus uncountable nouns.
