Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Many health related scientific works are being funded by individual corporations or entities. This is ultimately a good initiative in terms of advancements in medical treatments. Nevertheless,If they are carried out with government involvement,i t would definitely bring better outcomes at individual as well as community level in terms of treatments and awareness.
Although most of the trials or cross sectional studies are carried out by private label entities lately, it should be funded and overseen through a balanced partnerships between governments and solo proprietaries. The prime example of this synergy is GAVI, The Vaccine Alliance. By collecting resources from public organizations like WHO and private entities like Gates Foundation, GAVI has been successful in providing immunizations against infectious diseases among a wide set of nations. All the vaccines are made after a lot of research and trial and error process before it is made available for delivery.
The synergistic approach, alongwith providing treatments, also helps in carrying out health related campaigns to eradicate the disease from its root source. Community level awareness camps with the involvement of governments helps to aware individuals and society in general. For Instance, Colgate Toothpase organises dental camps with the help of local government to improve the oral health conditions amonf populations. Polio is another axample where wide community base campaigns are often run country wide to spread awareness.
In conclusion, a mixed balanced approach is effective where public organizations and private corporations come together to carry out significant health related research to aid individuals and society in general.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear: medical research is best funded and overseen through cooperation between governments and private organisations. You address the alternatives in the prompt and support your view with relevant examples, particularly GAVI’s partnership and public immunisation campaigns. The response also explains benefits beyond treatment, including disease prevention and awareness. This gives the argument a clear direction and relevant support. However, some claims are asserted rather than fully explained: the Colgate example is about dental camps and awareness, but its connection to funding or conducting medical research is not made explicit. The discussion would be stronger if you developed how shared funding improves research quality, access, or accountability, and briefly compared this model with relying solely on government or private companies.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall progression: it introduces a preference for collaboration, gives examples of partnerships and campaigns, and ends by restating the position. Paragraphing supports this structure, and linking expressions such as “Although,” “also,” and “In conclusion” help guide the reader. The examples are generally placed in relevant paragraphs. At times, however, the links between ideas are not fully explicit. For instance, the move from GAVI’s vaccine work to the claim about community awareness could be signposted more clearly, and the Colgate example does not directly demonstrate research collaboration. Some transitions, including “Nevertheless,” introduce a contrast that is not fully developed. Make the relationship between each example and your central argument explicit to strengthen progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “immunizations,” “infectious diseases,” “synergy,” and “community level,” and the meaning is generally clear. There are also attempts at less common or formal expressions, such as “eradicate the disease from its root source.” However, several choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “private label entities,” “solo proprietaries,” and “balanced partnerships”; these make parts of the argument less precise. Spelling errors such as “Toothpase,” “amonf,” and “axample” also reduce accuracy. Aim for established collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise terms such as “private-sector organisations,” “independent companies,” and “public–private partnership” would express your ideas more naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concessive opening with “Although” and a sentence beginning “By collecting resources…”. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems are present. For example, “it should be funded and overseen through a balanced partnerships” has a mismatch between the article and plural noun, while “helps to aware individuals” needs a grammatical construction such as “helps to make individuals aware.” In “before it is made available,” the pronoun reference to plural “vaccines” is unclear. There are also spacing and punctuation slips, such as “Nevertheless,If” and “i t.” Review agreement, articles, verb patterns, and sentence punctuation; these corrections would make your varied structures more controlled.
