IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent times, it is believed that many medical research projects are largely funded by private institutions. Personally, I believe that medical projects should be sponspored by the government because of some confidential information and cordination in medical research institues.
Firstly of all, the main reason why I support the view that government should be responsible for the financial support of most medical research is because of vital information. This is because there are some medical information that shouldn't be held by an individual or a private organisations, so that they won't mishandle those vital information. This means, some research details could be use wrongly by people for their selfish reasons thereby causing harm to the society. For instance, COVID-19 was escalated because it fell into wrong researchers hands and the world really suffered from the havoc. Therefore, I believe governement should handle research that are related to human's health.
Another major reason why I hold this position is because of cordination in the medical field. In other words, if government allow individual and private companies to handle all medical research there won't be ordeliness and it might led to choas and errors. Government should be involved in order to enforce rules and co-ordination. A clearer example is when two private institutions wanted to perform similar research, this may lead to wastage of funds and disorganisation. In addition, if governments have the uttermost authority in medical research project, government will be able to stop some research that can be hardazous to the community.
In conclusion, I believe governments should be financially involve in all medical reaserch projects because of some vital information that are highly private and for good cordination in the field.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction: you favour government funding and oversight, and the conclusion restates this view. You give two relevant reasons—protecting sensitive information and coordinating research—and support them with examples, including COVID-19 and duplication between private institutions. This addresses the task, but the development is uneven. The claim that COVID-19 spread because information reached “wrong researchers” is unclear and needs accurate explanation; the hypothetical example of two institutions conducting similar research also needs more detail about the consequences. The prompt asks you to consider who should carry out research, not only who should fund it, so clarify whether private researchers may participate under government regulation. More precise support and fuller treatment of this distinction would strengthen the response.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs presenting separate reasons, and a conclusion. Paragraphs generally progress from a main point to explanation and an example, and signposts such as “Firstly” and “Another major reason” help readers follow the argument. However, some linking is mechanical, particularly the repeated “This is because,” “This means,” and “In other words.” A few connections are also unclear: the COVID-19 example does not clearly demonstrate the risk of mishandled research information, and “Therefore” does not fully resolve that gap. Improve cohesion by making the relationship between each example and its claim explicit, and use pronouns or transitions more precisely so references remain clear.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “medical research,” “vital information,” “financial support,” “wastage of funds,” and “authority,” which helps communicate the argument. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “responsible for the financial support.” However, spelling errors and inaccurate word choices are noticeable and sometimes distract: “sponspored,” “cordination,” “ordeliness,” “choas,” and “hardazous” are misspelled, while “uttermost authority” is an unnatural collocation. Some phrases are vague or imprecise, such as “some medical information” and “wrong researchers hands.” Build accuracy by checking spelling and learning common academic collocations, and choose specific terms for the information or risks you mean.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses beginning “because,” “if,” and “when,” and the overall meaning is usually understandable. Some sentence patterns are controlled, such as “A clearer example is when two private institutions wanted to perform similar research.” However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction recur. For example, “there are some medical information” needs a different agreement pattern, “research details could be use wrongly” has an incorrect verb form, and “if government allow” lacks agreement. The sentence beginning “This is because” also has an unclear construction. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, countable and uncountable nouns, and verb forms after modal verbs; these corrections would make your complex sentences more reliable.
