IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In today's world, private companies are often seen funding medical research projects, while many believe that this is a responsibility of the government for the welfare of its people and the mankind.

Well, the reason behind private companies doing say can be the corporate social responsibility factor, a growing factor to consider positive externalities given out by businesses that helps increase their goodwill. Another reason may be the first mover advantage that they can gain by capturing the market early and making lots of profits through their research and development. Diversification among different types of activities can be another legit reason a private business may do so, to maximise its returns and minimise the losses.

When it comes to individuals, I don't think an individual (except for few elites like bill gates and elon musk) would have enough funds available to carry out such enormous and development enriched researches on their own. Even if they do, the biggest threat is the power of cure being trapped among the elites, leaving the underprivileged miserable.

For the government, it automatically comes as a responsibility to invest in RnD of such medical researches as even a little development can prove worthful and lead to saving thousands of lives and making the living experience better.

At the end of the day, I believe that a mixed approach, an integration between the government, affluent individuals and the private companies, poses as a better solution for increased advancement and divisioned burden, for the welfare of all human beings, despite whatever class they belong to.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

Your response addresses the question by considering private companies, individuals and government, then stating a clear preference for a mixed approach. The position is consistent, and relevant reasons are offered: companies may seek social responsibility benefits and commercial returns, while government investment can support public welfare. The concern that individuals may lack resources, and that treatments could remain accessible only to elites, also supports your argument. This is a solid response, though some points are asserted more than demonstrated. For example, the benefits of government research and the proposed partnership are not illustrated with a specific example or explained in detail. Developing one or two consequences more fully would make the support more convincing and precise.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response has a clear overall progression: it introduces the issue, discusses private companies, considers individuals and government, and concludes with your preferred combined model. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and transitions such as “When it comes to individuals” and “For the government” make the shifts easy to follow. The conclusion also returns directly to the central question. Some linking is a little formulaic, particularly the repeated use of topic-opening phrases, and the first paragraph moves quickly from the general issue to the competing view. The final sentence contains several ideas at once, which slightly weakens its impact. More varied transitions and a clearer separation of the partnership’s benefits would make the progression smoother.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use a reasonably broad range of topic-related vocabulary, including “corporate social responsibility,” “positive externalities,” “first mover advantage,” “diversification” and “underprivileged.” These choices show an attempt to express economic and social arguments precisely. However, several less common expressions are not used naturally or accurately: “development enriched researches,” “worthful,” “divisioned burden” and “doing say” make parts of the response sound awkward. Some wording is also imprecise, such as “the power of cure being trapped among the elites.” This range is adequate and sometimes ambitious, but more reliable collocations and natural phrasing are needed for greater flexibility. Prefer clear, conventional expressions when a technical term does not fit confidently.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5

You attempt a mix of sentence forms, including complex clauses such as “Even if they do, the biggest threat is…” and the concluding sentence beginning “At the end of the day.” Meaning is generally understandable, and the response shows some control of longer structures. However, some grammatical errors remain. In “a growing factor to consider positive externalities given out by businesses that helps,” the relative clause has an unclear reference and the verb does not agree with “businesses.” The opening phrase “while many believe that this is a responsibility” also leaves the reference of “this” somewhat unclear. In “except for few elites,” an article is missing. Simplifying crowded sentences and checking agreement, articles and clause references would improve accuracy while preserving variety.
