IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Toaday, many research regarding the medical sector are sponsered by private companies. In my opinion research related to medical products should be carried out by the government instead of private companies and individuals.
The main reason behind why the private organizations and individuals should not be permitted to fund for a new medical research in the country is that they will focus only on their own rather than focusing on the quality of the of the product and safty of the citizens. Consequently, they will manufacture medicines and other medical products which can affect consumers. For instance, many companies across the globe are selling medical products which can affect people's health in the long run.
Therefore, the government should fund the researchers for the advancement in the medical field. The authorities will make sure that the obtained product from the research will not have any side effects on people's health and they can use it in their day-to-day life. Not only that the another reason why the government should allocate money for research and the development of the medical sector in the country is that the citizens of the country are paying tax annually for the better health care system in the country. Therefore it is a responsibility of the authorities in the country to provide the best facilities to the citizens.
To conclude, research conducted from the privet organizations and individuals can be for their own benefits. For that reason, I believe the it is the responsibility of the government because citizens are paying annual tax for the better facilities in the country.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you argue that medical research should be funded by government rather than private companies or individuals, and you give relevant reasons about public safety and taxpayers’ expectations. The examples of potentially harmful products and the government’s role in checking safety support the main argument. However, the discussion of private funding is more fully explained than the case for government funding: the claim that authorities will ensure products have no side effects is asserted rather than illustrated, and the example remains general. The point about citizens paying tax is relevant but could be linked more explicitly to why this makes public funding preferable. Develop these ideas with a specific example and acknowledge how public oversight would work.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and a conclusion restates the position. Ideas generally progress from concerns about private interests to the government’s responsibility, and linking expressions such as “Consequently,” “Therefore,” and “To conclude” help guide the reader. This coherent arrangement is a strength. At times, however, connections feel mechanical or repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “Therefore” and “in the country.” Some references are also unclear, as in “the obtained product,” and the long sentence beginning “Not only that” combines several points without a clean structure. Use more varied transitions and make each paragraph’s central point and supporting explanation distinct.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “medical sector,” “medical products,” “research and development,” and “health care system,” so the main ideas are understandable. However, the range is limited and several noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation errors reduce precision: “Toaday,” “sponsered,” “safty,” and “privet” are misspelled, while “fund for a new medical research” and “the obtained product” are unnatural. Repetition of “country,” “government,” and “citizens” also makes the expression less flexible. Aim to learn common academic collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise terms such as “publicly funded research” and “commercial interests” would help express your argument clearly and naturally.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional-style explanation with “Consequently” and the clause “why the government should allocate money.” The overall meaning is usually clear, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence construction, agreement, articles, and punctuation. For example, “many research … are” has a number-agreement problem, and “the another reason” uses an incorrect article pattern. In “Not only that the another reason … is that,” the opening structure is incomplete or awkward, making the sentence difficult to follow. There are also unnecessary spaces around punctuation and within phrases. Practise building complex sentences with a clear subject and verb, and check agreement and article use when proofreading.
