IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent era, non-government companies are sponsoring a large number of research projects related to the healthcare. Although by any means, it helps the patients, I largely disagree with this sentiment because it's the duty of governing authorities and individuals.
Government must take initiatives for the new discoveries in healthcare. The government bodies are responsible for the betterment of lives of the citizens. Therefore, initiatives such as funding the research projects to ensure that the researchers can work on the specified topic without facing the obstacle of financial issue. A notable example of this is providing financial aid to the resesrchers or companies that tried to come up with the solution or antitode of Corona Virus. If the government would not have taken the initiative, the losses of the lives of citizens would have increased by a considerable amount. Thus, funding the projects is the duty of government.
Another possible sponsoring option is an individual person. The individuals that belongs to an affluent family or self-made billionaires, who want to work for the welfare of the future genrations. Although its not their duty to do so, if they want to be part of that project volunatarily, they can. To examplify, there is a self-made billionaire in my Pakistan who has gone thorugh a lot because most of his family members died from the diseases that had no cure at that time. Therefore, now he wants to make sure that no one's relative or loved one dies like this.
However, proponent so the private companies funding says that "It is for improvement of one's basic life. The source of financial assistance does not matter, be it a privste company or an authority. But as far as i am concerned, anything that can enchance the quality of the life of an individual, governing authorities must fund it.
In conclusion, Although getting a funding from a private comany is becoming increasingly common, providing financial aid for a healthcare project is the duty or government and individuals ( if he/she wants to do this by himself/herself).

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0
Your position is clear: you believe healthcare research should be funded by governments and, voluntarily, by individuals rather than relying on private companies. You address the main options and give relevant support, including the COVID-19 example and the personal story about a Pakistani philanthropist. However, the government argument is more fully explained than the individual-funding argument, whose example remains general and does not identify how the person supports research. The discussion of private companies is also brief: you report the opposing view but do not explain in detail why company funding may be problematic or how it compares with your preferred sources. Develop these points with specific reasons and examples to make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, moving from your position to government funding, individual support, an opposing view, and a conclusion. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these main stages, and linking expressions such as “Therefore,” “However,” and “In conclusion” signal relationships between ideas. Some connections are nevertheless mechanical or unclear. For example, “Although by any means, it helps the patients” does not clearly establish the contrast, and the opposing-view paragraph shifts abruptly from private companies to what authorities should fund. The conclusion repeats the main position but does not neatly resolve the contrast between government, individuals, and companies. Use more precise transitions and make each paragraph’s central point explicit, then connect the example directly to that point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “healthcare,” “financial aid,” “research projects,” “welfare,” and “quality of life.” These choices make the subject clear, and you attempt more specific expressions such as “self-made billionaire.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “in recent era,” “the duty of governing authorities,” “sponsoring option,” and “come up with the solution.” Spelling errors such as “resesrch,” “antitode,” “genrations,” and “volunatarily” also reduce accuracy. These issues do not prevent the reader from understanding your main ideas, but they limit precision and naturalness. Build a bank of common academic collocations for funding and medical research, and proofread spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional and subordinate clauses, as in “If the government would not have taken the initiative…” and “Although its not their duty to do so…”. The overall meaning is generally understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “The individuals that belongs” (agreement), “Although its not” (missing subject and apostrophe), and “the duty or government” in the conclusion. The conditional sentence about government action also needs a more accurate form, such as “If the government had not taken the initiative, the loss of life would have increased.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation in the final body paragraph are also difficult to follow. Practise agreement, conditional forms, and complete sentence construction while retaining your attempts at complex sentences.
