IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In recent year, several medical research projects are funded by private companies. However, I think that these types of research should be carried by higher autherities of the nation. I believe, it would help citizen to get medical facilities in cheaper prize.
Firstly, medical research project funded by the goverments would get more human resource in compare of private companies. Goverment can recruit more medical students easily since they have higher authorities. Research project funded by the governance could also lead to more employment rate which could help in faster development of country. For instance, students who are not getting chance to show their knowledge could help in the research.
Secondly, goverment can provied more financial support and can give more research facilities in cheaper price. Administration can make seperate budget paln specificly for medical research and provide all kinds of advance technology and high facilites to the researchers. Investment of national financial resource could be used for medical resource. Medical research can be helpfull for the whole nation so it should be funded by the government. It could also be hard for private companies to provide whole fund.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
Your position is clear: you believe national governments should fund medical research, and you give relevant reasons involving staffing, employment and financial support. The examples about medical students and a dedicated budget help explain this view. However, the response addresses the task only partially: it does not discuss whether individuals should fund research, nor does it compare the advantages or limitations of the different options in much depth. Several points remain under-developed, such as how government funding would make treatment cheaper. The response contains 181 words, so it is 69 words below the required minimum; the eight words copied from the prompt are excluded. Develop each reason with explanation or a specific example, and add a conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction states your view, followed by two body paragraphs introduced with “Firstly” and “Secondly.” This makes the main reasons easy to identify. However, progression within the paragraphs is sometimes loose: the point about employment is added to the staffing argument without clearly showing how it supports the case for government funding. Some links are also repetitive, particularly the repeated use of “could” and “government.” The essay ends without a concluding paragraph, so the argument feels unfinished. To improve, organise each paragraph around one central reason, connect each supporting detail explicitly to that reason, and finish by restating your position and summarising the main points.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “medical research,” “financial support,” “researchers” and “advance technology,” so the reader can follow the subject and your main ideas. However, the range is limited and several word-choice, collocation and spelling errors make the writing less natural. Examples include “higher autherities,” “human resource,” “cheaper prize” and “seperate budget paln.” Repetition of “government,” “research” and “could” also restricts variety. Aim to learn accurate phrases for this topic, such as “public funding,” “medical workforce” and “allocate a budget,” and check spelling carefully. More precise vocabulary would help you explain the benefits and limitations of public funding without relying on repeated general terms.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple sentences and longer structures, including “Since they have higher authorities” and “It could also be hard for private companies to provide whole fund.” This shows an effort to connect ideas, but the range remains limited and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. For example, “In recent year” has incorrect number and article use, while “Research project funded by the goverments would get” has problems with articles, pluralisation and agreement. In “I believe, it would help citizen,” the punctuation and singular/plural form are inaccurate. Practise building accurate sentences with subordinate clauses, and check articles, subject–verb agreement and plural nouns. Greater control of these basics will make your reasoning easier to follow.
