IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Medical Research Projects should be funded by Government

Nowadays , in the world many medical research projects are funded by private companies but that is not good beacuse in this way the medical research will be limited to only that company and it will not be for the benefit of the local people.

so in order to benefit the local people the medical research projects should be under the government.

The main reason for this include :

The new inventions will be available for whole world not for the only company. The bughet will be higher as government is paying. The new inventions will end all the myths. The new doctors and the nurses will work under the government and that is the safe job rather than wok under an individual.Tere will be more job opportunities to get a job and it will end the unemployment from the country . by this they will hier the good researchears and the work will be good .

Example :

If we look back in the past of Pakistan's Atomic History . This was started in time of Bhutto Zardari . At that time this was named as Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission that is the governent institution . Now if we think that if it would be a private institution this would not be able to benefit the Pakistan . As this was the government institution so due to this Pakistan became the atomic power in 1998. Pakistan conducted atomic blasts at the place of chaghi, Balochistan on 28,May,1998 with the help of the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission.

so by considering this we can conclude that the medical research projects should be under the government .This will give us many benefits in every field of knowledge. Most of the benefits are discussed in the above paragraph .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear preference for government funding, and the Pakistan Atomic Energy Commission example is relevant to your argument about public institutions. However, the response only partly develops the task: several claims, such as government research benefiting the whole world, ending myths, and creating jobs, are listed rather than explained or linked specifically to medical research. The example concerns atomic energy and national defence, so its relevance to medical research needs to be made explicit. The comparison with private companies and individuals is also limited, and the conclusion mainly repeats your position. To strengthen the response, explain the benefits and possible drawbacks of each funding source and support your main reasons with medical examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

There is some organisation: you state your position, give reasons, provide an example, and finish with a conclusion. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these parts. However, the overall progression is not always clear because several different claims are crowded into one section, with little explanation of how they connect. The sequence beginning “The new inventions will be available…” reads as a list, and transitions such as “so” and “by this” are repeated or do not clearly show the relationship between ideas. The example paragraph contains useful detail but does not clearly connect the atomic-energy case to medical research. Group each main reason into a developed paragraph and use precise linking and referencing to guide the reader.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some task-related vocabulary, including “medical research projects,” “government institution,” “job opportunities,” and “researchers,” so the main topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several expressions are inaccurate or awkward, which sometimes makes the intended meaning harder to follow. For example, “the bughet will be higher” and “end all the myths” do not express the intended ideas clearly; “work under an individual” is also imprecise in this context. Spelling errors such as “beacuse,” “goverment,” and “researchears” are noticeable. Build a more precise vocabulary for funding and research, and check spelling and collocations carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

The response communicates its main position, and it attempts some longer sentence forms, including the conditional construction “if it would be a private institution.” However, sentence structures are limited and errors occur frequently, sometimes making relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “The main reason for this include” has subject–verb disagreement, while “the medical research projects should be under the government” is repeated without varied grammatical framing. Several sentences run together, particularly the list of reasons, and punctuation around sentence openings and clauses is inconsistent. Practise building accurate sentences with clear subjects and verbs, and use a controlled mix of simple and complex structures, checking agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries.
