IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In the recent years, numerous research projects receive funding by private organizations. Although these private companies have been doing a noticeably good job, I strongly believe that there should be a synergy between the government, individuals and private companies with the government taking up the larger share since it is not limited with resources and funds.

Firstly, the government is rich in resources needed in conducting research. Private companies may have less personnell required in a particular field and also have limited equipment. For instance, in 2020,when the world was hit by Covid 19 pandemic, the government of Kenya incorporated many specialists in doing research as well as private doctors. Consequently, many patients were saved due to the swift measures taken to curb the issue as the vaccine was discovered immediately by government agencies.

Secondly, the government is able to access foreign aid from overseas, which would not be possible with individuals. For instance, Uganda was able to seek foreign help from the USA when there was an outbreak in Ebola. They were able to be constructed a quarantine centre within few weeks and the disease was eventually mitigated from spreading.

Admittedly, private organisations have proven to be effective in medical research. However, they cannot do it in large scale and I entirely believe that the government should be given an upper hand in conducting such research while working together with individuals and private companies as the government is endowed with enough resources and can also be in a position to easily seek help from other nations.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: you favour cooperation among government, individuals and companies, with government taking the leading role. You address the alternatives and support your view with examples involving Kenya and Uganda, so the response covers the task. The explanation that governments have greater resources is relevant, but the examples are not always clearly connected to medical research: the Kenya account makes a broad claim about a vaccine being discovered immediately, while the Uganda example focuses on building a quarantine centre rather than conducting research. The role of individuals and private companies is also asserted more than explained. To strengthen the response, develop how each group contributes and use examples that directly demonstrate research outcomes, while qualifying claims that may be too broad.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall progression: the introduction states your position, two body paragraphs present reasons, and the final paragraph acknowledges private organisations before reaffirming your view. Sequencing words such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Admittedly” help readers follow this structure. The examples are placed alongside the relevant points, and the conclusion returns to the central argument. Some links between claims and evidence could be more explicit, however; for example, the Uganda example describes foreign assistance and a quarantine centre, but the connection to medical research is not fully explained. The final paragraph also repeats the resource argument from the introduction. Make these relationships clearer and use the conclusion to synthesise the distinct contributions of each group.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.5

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “research projects,” “specialists,” “foreign aid,” “outbreak,” and “quarantine centre.” Phrases such as “taking up the larger share” and “endowed with enough resources” show attempts to express your position in varied ways. Some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, though: “funding by private organizations” is less natural than “funded by,” and “doing research” is repeated where more precise wording could help. “Mitigated from spreading” does not express the intended meaning naturally, and “upper hand” is somewhat informal for this argument. Aim for precise academic collocations and vary repeated terms, while checking that each phrase conveys the intended relationship.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession clause beginning “Although” and a reason clause with “since.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “there should be a synergy … with the government taking up” is structurally awkward, and “They were able to be constructed a quarantine centre” has an incorrect passive construction. There are also issues with articles and sentence boundaries, as in “within few weeks” and “2020,when.” The long opening sentence would be clearer if divided or reshaped. Review passive forms, article use, and punctuation around dates, and aim to produce more consistently accurate complex sentences.
