IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Today, the funds for a great number of projects related to medical research are allocated by private organizations. In my perspective, private companies should continue to provide funds to support these medical related projects.

There are several reasons behind this perspective, the first one is that private companies have better work ethics and a greater sense of understanding about what they are going to do and how to carry a research project as compared to the government organizations. For instance, the individuals working in a private organization follow a proper protocol and heirarchy system. These type of systems contribute better quality research and result into authentic findings. The government organizations also have these systems however they are not affective, this is mainly because of corruption in government sectors and lack of work ethics in addition to that, individuals follow the similar pattern.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0

You state a clear preference: private companies should continue funding medical research, and you give one reason concerning work practices and research quality. However, the response addresses the question only minimally: it does not meaningfully compare private companies with individuals, and the government alternative is dismissed mainly through a broad claim about corruption. The example about protocols and hierarchy is relevant but not developed to show how private funding improves medical outcomes. The response also contains 142 words, so it does not meet the required minimum of 250 words. To strengthen the answer, explain at least two distinct reasons, support them with specific examples, and address the other funding options before concluding firmly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a basic overall shape: an opening position is followed by a paragraph giving reasons and a brief comparison with government organisations. Linking phrases such as “For instance” and “however” help signal examples and contrast. However, the argument does not progress far beyond the initial claim, and the second paragraph combines several points—work ethics, protocols, research quality, corruption and similar patterns—without clearly separating or developing them. The sentence beginning “The government organizations also have these systems” is difficult to follow because the contrast and the reference to “these systems” are not fully clarified. Organise the body into distinct points, use clearer references, and add a conclusion that restates the position.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “medical research,” “protocol,” “authentic findings” and “corruption,” and the main meaning is generally understandable. There is also some attempt to use more formal language, such as “allocated” and “in my perspective.” However, several expressions are awkward or imprecise, including “medical related projects,” “carry a research project” and “result into authentic findings.” “Heirarchy” is misspelled, and “affective” appears where the intended word is likely “effective.” These choices reduce naturalness and precision, although the reader can usually infer your meaning. Build a more accurate range of research-related collocations and check spelling carefully.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a sentence with “as compared to” and a contrast introduced by “however.” The opening sentences are mostly clear, and the reader can follow your central position. However, some sentence structures are awkward or incomplete in their punctuation. For example, “There are several reasons behind this perspective, the first one is that…” joins two independent clauses with only a comma. In “These type of systems,” the demonstrative does not agree with the plural noun, and the final sentence contains a long sequence of clauses that is difficult to control. Use full stops or semicolons to separate complete ideas, and practise accurate agreement and clause construction.
