IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Recent days private companies seem to give funding for research projects more than Government or any individuals. In my opinion I think research should be carried out by Government more.
Research is a broader area to deep into someone's thoughts or some broader perspectives to any project. Research can be an asset for a country. Also research projects can bring different perspectives, people from various backgrounds coming to one single opinion. If the government funds more to research projects then individuals will show more interest to do research projects. Students should be encouraged more to do research projects, not only in university but colleges can also introduce primary research work or giving some basic knowledge to the students that will encourage the students to involve in more research projects later in their life.
If a private company provide fundings for a research project it won't hold that much of importance to the students than government can seem to have. Though one private company cannot simultaneously give funding for every research projects. So that's also one kind of problem that'll be faced by the researchers, to search of fundings every times to do a research project as its matter of lots of fundings.
So I think Government should come forward to encourage young generations to do more research projects and take the country's lead to next level. Government can also introduce different types of scholarship opportunities for the young generations and professors should also be trained regarding research projects. And as far as the question for individuals to fund for a project I would say that its more pressurizing than doing a project.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear: you believe government should fund research, and you give relevant reasons, including encouraging students and providing scholarships. You also address private and individual funding, noting that one company may not support every project and that individual funding could be pressurising. However, the response only partially develops the comparison requested. The claim that government funding would make research more important to students is not explained, and the discussion of individual funders is brief. The point about research bringing people to “one single opinion” is also unclear and not convincingly linked to your argument. Develop each reason with a specific explanation or example, and compare the advantages and limitations of all three funding sources more directly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction states your view, followed by reasons and a concluding recommendation. Paragraphs generally group related points, and transitions such as “Also,” “Though,” and “So” help signal relationships. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow because several ideas are joined without a clear explanation of how they connect. For example, the discussion moves from research as a national asset to students’ interest and then to colleges’ teaching without showing the links between these points. Some transitions are also awkward or repetitive. Organise each body paragraph around one main reason, explain it in sequence, and use clearer referencing so readers can follow how each point supports government funding.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “research projects,” “funding,” “scholarship opportunities,” and “researchers,” so the main subject is clear. There are also attempts at more formal expressions such as “come forward to encourage” and “take the country's lead to next level.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or repetitive, which sometimes makes the meaning less clear. Examples include “Recent days,” “deep into someone's thoughts,” “fundings,” and “search of fundings.” Repeated use of “research projects” also limits flexibility. Build a more precise set of academic phrases for discussing public investment, private sponsorship, and research outcomes, and check whether each expression is natural in context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, including conditional structures such as “If the government funds more… then individuals will show more interest” and a contrast beginning “Though one private company…”. These attempts show some range, and the overall meaning is usually recoverable. However, errors in agreement, articles, sentence construction, and punctuation recur. For example, “If a private company provide” needs subject–verb agreement, while “one single opinion” appears within a sentence whose structure is difficult to control. The opening sentence also lacks a clear grammatical construction, and some long sentences combine several ideas without secure punctuation. Practise building accurate complex sentences, especially with conditional clauses, and check agreement and sentence boundaries during revision.
