Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
In recent world, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. However, I believe that research should be carried by all three stake holders (private companies, individuals and government)so that funds can be consolidated to provide better and reliable results.
To begin with, if these three entities invest into medical research there could be enough resources for researchers to complete their projects. Further medical studies require alot of money for professionals to fully come to an agreement. For instance, to find a cure to some lifestyle diseases researchers may need several specimens to try out their findings. These specimens are costly and need proper storage for them to be effective. Therefore, some private companies may be at risk of running bankrupt. As a result, they may abadon there research or give half baked responses to citizens. Ultimately leading to severe consequences to people's health.
Additionally, working as a team in most cases gives out better results because each individual contributes to the project. They may want to give their best to prove a point. To illistrate, if the three stakeholders v

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5
You state a clear position: research should be funded by private companies, individuals and government, with pooled funding providing more reliable results. The points about research costs and the risk that a company may abandon a project are relevant, but they are only partly explained, and the response does not develop the role or contribution of individuals and government. The second body paragraph begins to discuss teamwork but ends mid-sentence (“if the three stakeholders v”), so the supporting example and conclusion are missing. The response is also 173 words, below the required 250; 9 words copied from the task prompt were excluded from the count. To address the task more fully, complete the argument, explain each funder’s role, and add a conclusion.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a sequence of linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “Additionally,” and “As a result.” These help signal the direction of the argument. However, progression is limited because the second paragraph stops abruptly at “if the three stakeholders v,” leaving the point unfinished and the essay without a conclusion. Some links are also awkward: “Ultimately leading to severe consequences” is a sentence fragment rather than a complete continuation, and “Further” does not clearly connect the cost claim to the next sentence. Develop each paragraph around one complete point, use references that clearly identify who “they” means, and finish with a summary of your position.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “medical research,” “resources,” “specimens,” and “lifestyle diseases,” and phrases such as “running bankrupt” show an attempt to express more specific ideas. However, several choices or spellings are inaccurate or unnatural, including “alot,” “abandon there research,” “half baked responses,” and “illistrate.” “Stake holders” is also better written as one word, “stakeholders.” These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding the main argument, but they reduce precision and control. Aim for accurate collocations and spelling, and choose formal expressions suited to an academic essay—for example, describe companies as facing financial losses rather than “running bankrupt.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional clause (“if these three entities invest…”) and a purpose clause (“so that funds can be consolidated”). The main ideas are generally understandable, but errors in sentence construction and punctuation remain. “Ultimately leading to severe consequences to people's health” is a fragment and should be joined to the preceding sentence; there is also no space before the parenthesis in “government)so.” The final sentence is incomplete, ending with “if the three stakeholders v,” which prevents the structure from being understood. Practise completing clauses and checking sentence boundaries, punctuation, and spacing. More accurate control of these structures would make the argument easier to follow.
