IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

In recent days, most of the medical research projects are funded by private companies instead of governing bodies or individuals.

To begin with, I think that reseach projects, especially medical research projects should be prioterised by everybody. Nowadays, mostly private companies invests in medical reseach projects which demoralises other research facilities as the competition and the requirement to get funded is quite high due to the lack of investors. The private companies do so, in case of a major breakthrough in a project that they invested in, they can monetise that research for their own gain.

On the other hand, governing bodies reduced their fundings for medical reseach projects significantly, due to which many medical researches have been put on hold or are never completed. I personally think that the government should prioterise and keep funds for medical reseach projects comparatively more, as some promising researches can cause a major breakthrough in the field of science (STEM).

Governing bodies should encourage the youths and other facilities by providing funds to promising small or big medical researches performed. Doing so will encourage the researchers to give their all to their work and research. For instance, the government should establish a scheme for youths, especially students studying in STEM. They should advertise that the governing bodies will provide with funds for promising research projects at even college levels.

Overall, fundings required for medical reseach projects should be prioterised by government in my view, as these projects can help the nation give it it's big break and encourage more research facilities and researchers to grow and show up.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear overall preference for government funding, especially in the final paragraph, and explain relevant reasons: private firms may seek to monetise discoveries, while public support could help promising research and encourage young researchers. The example of a government scheme for STEM students also relates to the question. However, the task asks you to consider whether research should be carried out by private companies, individuals, or government. Your discussion focuses mainly on government versus private companies, with individuals’ role barely addressed, and the benefits and limitations of each option are not developed in much detail. The opening also says projects should be prioritised by “everybody,” which makes your position less precise before it becomes clearer later. Develop the comparison and explain why your preferred model is best.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, contrasting paragraphs signalled by “To begin with” and “On the other hand,” and a concluding summary. The ideas generally relate to the topic, and the government funding proposal follows from your concern that research is being put on hold. However, progression is somewhat repetitive: the need to prioritise research and increase government funding is restated several times without adding much new reasoning. The opening claim that research should be prioritised by “everybody” is not clearly connected to the later preference for government leadership. Some links between claims also need explanation, such as how private investment “demoralises” other facilities. Use clearer topic sentences and develop each paragraph around one distinct point, with more precise referencing.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-relevant vocabulary, including “breakthrough,” “investors,” “funds,” “research facilities,” and “STEM,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “promising research” and “monetise that research.” However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, particularly “medical research projects,” “funds,” and “government.” Some choices are inaccurate or unnatural, including “demoralises other research facilities,” “give their all to their work and research,” and “show up,” which make parts of the argument less precise. Spelling errors such as “reseach” and “prioterised” are noticeable. Build a wider set of accurate collocations for funding, conducting research, and commercial interests, and proofread spelling.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentences, including a conditional structure in “in case of a major breakthrough … they can monetise that research” and a reason clause beginning “as some promising researches can cause…”. However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur in basic agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction. For example, “private companies invests” should use a plural verb, while “governing bodies reduced their fundings” does not clearly express the intended general present situation. The sentence beginning “Doing so will encourage…” runs into “research. For instance,” without a space or clear punctuation. The final sentence also has an unclear construction around “give it it’s big break.” Aim for more reliable simple sentences first, then check agreement, tense consistency, and punctuation when combining clauses.
