IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

It is an undeniable fact that the private corporations are providing funds for a lot of medical projects in the present time. Although, there is a big number of those people who will agree with this notion,I strongly disagree with it. I am not in this favour because this is the deuty of government. Private sectors are not responsible for this. In this eassy I will demonstrate my point of view.

There are a lot of reasons to disagree with this statement but the most compelling reason that compend me against the given argument is that government take taxes from the public for their welfare. That is why government is answerable to people for their facilities. For instance, according to recent studies the countries which spend on the medical research projects aur running in progress.Hence, this factor can single handedly ellaborates my perspective.

However, another considerable reason to illustrates my stance is that if government will provide funds for such projects then the public will have trust in their governmental policies and remain relax that their money is spending on their welfare. Otherwise, there will be conflicts in a country. For example, recent studies shows that countries who are not serious regarding their people and not providing them their basic rights are facing serious conflicts. The reason is that private sectors are too much expensive which a normal person can not afford and public is facing depression and anxiety. Thus, this justification clearly highlights the significance of my perspective.

In conclusion, even though people have their own views ,I strongly disagree with the given statement due to reason that if private companies will spend on the medical projects then they will charge high from the people. Moreover, providing funds for such projects is responsibility of government.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you oppose private companies funding medical research and argue that government should take responsibility. You give two relevant reasons—public money should support public welfare, and private providers may charge patients heavily—and include examples about trust and social conflict. However, the response addresses the choice of funder only partially: it does not consider whether individuals should fund research, and the examples are broad claims about unnamed “recent studies” rather than specific evidence. The point about government spending and public trust is also asserted more than explained. To strengthen the response, compare the roles of government, companies and individuals, then develop each reason with a concrete example and a clear link to medical research.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the main position is generally easy to identify. Paragraphs also have central purposes: the first discusses public taxes and welfare, while the second focuses on trust and affordability. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear, and linking phrases can feel mechanical. For example, “Hence, this factor can single handedly…” does not clearly follow from the preceding claim, while “Otherwise, there will be conflicts” introduces a consequence that is not sufficiently connected to medical research. The repeated phrases “my perspective” and “my stance” add little. Build clearer cause-and-effect links and use referencing and transitions that show precisely how each example supports the argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You attempt a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “medical research projects,” “governmental policies,” “basic rights,” and “private sectors,” and the reader can generally understand your intended position. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “the most compelling reason.” However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision: “deuty,” “eassy,” “compend,” “ellaborates,” and “remain relax” are examples. Some expressions are also unnatural or imprecise, including “running in progress” and “charge high from the people.” These issues make parts of the argument harder to follow. Focus on accurate collocations and spelling, and prefer direct wording—for example, explain that private providers may charge patients high fees rather than relying on vague phrases.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “if government will provide funds…” and clauses introduced by “Although” and “because.” However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur frequently enough to sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. Examples include “the private corporations are providing funds” where the article and tense are awkward, “government take taxes” with subject–verb disagreement, and “their money is spending” instead of a correctly formed passive construction. The opening “Although” is also incorrectly punctuated as a separate sentence fragment. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement, articles, verb forms and conditional patterns, and check punctuation around introductory clauses. Aim to make complex sentences accurate before adding more.
