IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.0)

Today, most of the medical research projects are funded by private companies. From my perspective it should be done by government because government have a facility of unsufficient funds which can be give more benefits in the researches.

To begin with, one of the main benefits is that if officials would do start research it will be more beneficial. The reason behind this is that, government have unsufficient funds which will benefit more to the researches. They pay to the scientists and whatever tool or any things which can be required, they will provide easily because they have numerous sources as compared to private companies. For instance, in China, most of the researches done by government, eventually it is more advantageous for their country and also for citizens.

Moreover, another advantage, if researches can be done by offcials is that, any thing which is not present in their own country they would easily resource it from other countries by official way. It cannot be denied by other countries because they will trust more on government as compared to the private companies. As a result, the research would be reliable as well as more accurate. For instance, in the USA, there researches are extremely correct and more reliable because it has taken by their officials not private companies.

In conclusion, private companies research is also beneficail but I belive that if research conducted by officials, it is more advantageous because they have a lot of funds and resources which eventually would be more improvements in the researches.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

You give a clear overall preference for government-funded research and provide two supporting reasons: greater access to funds and resources, and the ability to obtain materials internationally. The China and USA examples are relevant in principle, but they are asserted rather than explained, so they do not strongly demonstrate the claimed benefits. The response also gives little consideration to the alternatives named in the question—private companies and individuals—and the conclusion only briefly acknowledges private research. This leaves the discussion partial, with key ideas under-developed. The response is 247 words, three words below the 250-word minimum; the eight words copied from the task prompt were not counted. Develop the examples and explain more directly why government funding is preferable to the other options.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “To begin with” and “Moreover,” and a conclusion. This makes the main position and supporting points easy to locate. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes repetitive: the first body paragraph repeats the claim about government having funds, and several sentences begin with similar conditional phrasing. Connections such as “As a result” are used, but the relationship between international access and research accuracy is not fully explained. Some references, including “it” in the final paragraph, are unclear. To improve, give each paragraph a distinct central point, develop it step by step, and use pronouns only when their reference is unmistakable.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some task-related vocabulary, including “medical research,” “scientists,” “resources,” “reliable,” and “accurate,” so the topic is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “researches,” “government,” and “beneficial.” There are also noticeable word-choice, collocation, and spelling problems, such as “unsufficient funds,” “resource it from other countries,” “offcials,” and “beneficail.” These errors sometimes make the intended meaning less clear. Aim to learn common academic combinations and check spelling and word forms carefully. More precise alternatives for funding, conducting studies, and obtaining materials would help you express your ideas with less repetition.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences with clauses, for example, “The reason behind this is that…” and “It cannot be denied by other countries because…”. However, the range is limited, and complex constructions are often faulty. Agreement and verb forms are problematic in “government have” and “if officials would do start research”; the latter also has an awkward conditional structure. Other examples include “any thing which is not present in their own country they would easily resource it” and “if research conducted by officials,” where sentence structure or required verb forms are missing. Punctuation is also inconsistent, particularly the missing space after “In conclusion,”. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and build complex sentences around a clear main clause.
