Student answer (Band 6.5)

The medical sector is considered one of the most important sectors for the well-being of human civilization. Nowadays, most of the research projects regarding medicine are funded and capitalized by private companies. Consequently, those companies for the sake of profit, set the prices at higher range. So, I believe that these kind of reasearch projects should be carried out by the government. This is mainly because, citizens can benefit significantly from it.

To commence with, the primary reason is the cost. With private companies involved in medical projects, the medicines that should be utilized for saving lives gets converted into business for profits. Moreover, there can be many factors affecting those projects, as in private companies, there is no fixed order, any minor hindrance from the higher ups and shareholders can cause it to fail miserably. For instance, in the USA, most of the medicines are monopolized by private companies and the prices of the medicine and other services are way pricey compared to other countries, where the government handles it.

Furthermore, with the government being involved, the healthcare costs can be reduced by enabling earlier diagnosis and more effective treatments, reducing the overall societal expenses. Governments will also invest in research projects ignored by private institutions due to lack of immediate profit potential. Additionally, many job opportunities can arise, boosting the economy and benefiting th citizens. For eg, in the UK, there are lots of employment opportunities in medical sector, especially in government healthcare sectors.

In conclusion, I believe that there are many risks involved with private sectors or individuals being involved in a critical sector like health and medicine. With government handling it, it can be reassuring and ill intentions can be avoided. Many citizens' life can be saved and the way of living can be advanced.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you argue that medical research should be government-led, and you give relevant reasons concerning affordability, research priorities and employment. The comparison with medicine prices in the USA and the reference to UK healthcare provide examples, so the response addresses the main question. However, some parts are developed more fully than others. The cost argument is explained, but the claim that private-company projects can fail because of “any minor hindrance” is broad and not supported with a specific example. The employment point is also only briefly linked to government research. To strengthen the response, explain how public funding would produce the stated benefits and develop each example more precisely.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The essay has a clear overall progression: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. Paragraphs are focused, and signposts such as “To commence with,” “Furthermore,” and “In conclusion” make the stages easy to follow. This logical organisation supports the reader throughout. Some linking is a little formulaic, however, and a few connections between claims could be clearer. For example, the move from government research to “many job opportunities” would benefit from an explanation of how research funding creates those jobs. Use transitions selectively and connect each supporting point explicitly to the paragraph’s main argument.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “medical research projects,” “earlier diagnosis,” “effective treatments,” and “profit potential.” These expressions help communicate the main ideas, and the meaning is generally clear. There are, however, some inaccurate or awkward choices and spelling slips that limit precision: “capitalized” is not the natural term for funding research, “way pricey” is informal, and “reasearch” and “th citizens” contain errors. Phrases such as “set the prices at higher range” and “medicines ... gets converted into business” are also unnatural. Aim for more precise collocations and a consistently formal register, especially when describing costs and commercial motives.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “With the government being involved, the healthcare costs can be reduced” and a relative clause in “projects ignored by private institutions.” Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “these kind of reasearch projects” needs plural agreement, while “medicines ... gets converted” has a subject–verb agreement problem. In “the medicines that should be utilized for saving lives gets converted,” the sentence also needs a clearer grammatical construction. Review agreement, articles and sentence boundaries, and proofread punctuation around introductory phrases such as “Consequently.” More consistent control would make the argument smoother.
