Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

There is no denying the fact that many medical research projects need to be funded inorder to carry on. While there is a commonly held belief that many medical research projects are funded by private companies. There is also arguments that opposes it. In my opinion, i consider that medical research projects should be funded by government.

To begin with, medical research projects funded by private companies can eventually turn into a market competition instead of its main purpose of providing solutions for diseases. In other words, other companies can fund their own medical research project just to compete with other companies and make more profit regardless of the outcomes of the research. For example, the many medical research project that were funded to make a vaccine for coronavirus which turned into who can sell more rather than helping people.

Another point to consider, people tend to be more satisfied when hearing that a medical research project is being funded by the government rather than being funded by individuals or private companies. Its also possible to say that medical research projects funded by individuals or private companies can be suspicious to some people and have another hidden purpose than helping people. Moreover, medical projects funded by government are more relyble and safe because its publicly shown and accessible for all people.

In conclusion, despite people having different views, I believe that medical research projects should be carried by governments so it can be more clear and organized with a very abvious resoans and showcasing the goals that should be acheived from the research itself.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you believe governments should fund medical research, and you give relevant reasons about commercial competition and public trust. The example of coronavirus vaccine research helps illustrate your concern that profit may compete with public benefit. However, the response addresses the question only partially because it does not explain why government funding would produce better research outcomes in detail, and the comparison with funding by individuals is only briefly mentioned. The claim that government-funded projects are “more reliable and safe” needs explanation or a specific example. Develop each main point with a clearer cause-and-effect explanation and evidence. The response meets the stated length requirement; nine words copied from the task prompt were excluded from the count.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The ideas generally follow a sensible order, and signposts such as “To begin with,” “Another point to consider” and “In conclusion” help readers identify the stages of the argument. However, progression within paragraphs is sometimes unclear or repetitive. For example, the second body paragraph moves from public satisfaction to suspicion and then reliability without fully showing how these points connect. The opening also repeats the task’s statement about private funding before presenting the writer’s view. Use clearer links between claims and explanations, and make each paragraph develop one central reason rather than adding loosely connected assertions.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main argument, including “market competition,” “solutions for diseases,” “hidden purpose” and “outcomes of the research.” However, the range is limited and several word choices or spelling errors make the writing less precise, such as “carried by governments,” “more relyble,” “abvious” and “resoans.” Some phrases are also awkward or repetitive, including “medical research projects” and “funded by.” Aim for more accurate collocations and a wider range of terms, such as “conducted,” “publicly funded,” “commercial interests” and “research objectives.” Proofreading spelling and choosing more natural academic phrasing would make your argument clearer and more fluent.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional-style explanation beginning “In other words” and a sentence using “because.” However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently enough to affect clarity. The opening contains a sentence fragment: “While there is a commonly held belief…” is not completed with a main clause. There are also agreement and sentence-structure problems in “There is also arguments that opposes it” and “the many medical research project that were funded.” Capitalisation and punctuation need attention, as in “i” and “Its also possible.” Practise building complete sentences, checking subject–verb agreement and using apostrophes and capital letters consistently. More accurate control of these basics will make your ideas easier to follow.
