Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

Your position is clear: you support private companies funding medical research, and you give three relevant reasons—creating research opportunities and jobs, raising institutions’ international profile, and encouraging people to enter the field. The Japan and WHO examples also show an attempt to support your points. However, the reasons are mostly asserted rather than explained in detail. For example, the claim that private funding raises an institution’s rank needs a clearer explanation of how funding leads to recognition, and the WHO award example is vague. The comparison with government funding is also brief, while the task’s alternatives of individuals and government are not fully considered. Develop each reason with a specific explanation or example to make the response more complete and convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has an introduction, separate body paragraphs and a conclusion, and signposting such as “Firstly,” “Secondly” and “To sum up” makes the main points easy to identify. This gives the essay some overall organisation. However, progression within paragraphs is uneven: the second body paragraph begins with a repeated general statement about doctoral research before introducing the point about institutional rankings. Some links are mechanical or unclear, including “As,” at the start of sentences and “not only … as well as,” which does not form a clear parallel structure. The final point about encouraging early-career individuals is left without explanation or an example. Organise each paragraph around one claim, then explain and support it, using clearer links between sentences.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “medical research projects,” “research opportunities,” “global level” and “pursue,” so the reader can follow the subject and your main ideas. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing. However, the range is limited and several word choices, collocations and spelling errors make parts of the response awkward or less precise. Examples include “a plenty of fundings,” “doctoral researches,” “opt a career” and “research medical field”; spellings such as “unemplyed,” “reaserchers” and “instititutions” also distract. Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “fund medical research,” “doctoral research” and “pursue a career in medical research.” Proofreading spelling and checking whether nouns are countable will improve clarity.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a concession in the introduction (“Although some people might think…”) and a sentence using “not only … but also.” These attempts show some range, but control is inconsistent, and errors sometimes make relationships between ideas difficult to follow. For example, “Although some people might think that it should be covered by government or individuals but…” combines two contrasting structures incorrectly; “Funding by private companies not only create … but also encouraged…” has problems with agreement and parallel verb forms. Other examples include “researches are often perform” and “it will encourage … individuals to pursue,” where verb forms or sentence construction need correction. Practise building accurate complex sentences and check subject–verb agreement, articles and consistent verb forms.
