IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.5)
Often medical research projects are thesedays, given fund by private companies.Medical research projects should be carried out by local authorities instead of self or private funded companies in my opinion for benefits of human wellbeing.
Local authorities should use their funds for researches for human wellbeing.Maximum number of available sources should be used.Authorites should check the quality of the projects.Government research projects have large number of funds compared to private research projects.Vaccines made by local authorites are sold on low price compared to vaccines developed by private companies. For Instance,Vaccines developed by government funded companies were budget freindly during Covid-19.However,Private companies developed were more costly.
Funds for private companies held medical research projects are quite less and are avoided to use more.Wastage of money is also low but researches took long time for valid development.Sometimes, researches are carried out on self by many individuals but the ratio of success is very less. For Example,A friend of mine was gathering ancient stones around the globe and did researches on them.Marks were only sometimes identified due to lack of resources and many projects were left undone.
In Conclusion,Medical research projects even cost less and are beneficial for short terms and long terms funded and carried out by local or government authorities instead of projects continued and funded by private companies or individuals. The ratio of success is also very high compared to private comaniesThe ratio for private companies or individual held research projects is very negligible. However,Government funded medical research projects are more helpful and only way for fast and successful achievements.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear: you favour government or local-authority funding over private or individual research. You give relevant reasons, including public affordability, access to resources and the low success rate of individual projects, and the Covid-19 vaccine example helps illustrate your point. However, the response only partly develops the task. The comparison between government and private research is asserted rather than supported with clear evidence, and the example about a friend collecting ancient stones is not closely connected to medical research. The conclusion repeats the preference but introduces claims such as government research being the “only way” to achieve success without explaining them. Develop each reason with a medical example and clarify why government funding is preferable overall.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. The paragraphs broadly group related points, and signposts such as “However,” “For Instance” and “In Conclusion” help show the intended relationships. Nevertheless, progression within paragraphs is sometimes difficult to follow: the first body paragraph moves from funding and project quality to vaccine prices, while the second shifts from private funding to individual research and an unrelated personal example. Some links are repetitive or unclear, and the conclusion repeats the success-rate claim rather than synthesising the reasons. Use a clearer sequence—one paragraph on government benefits and one on the limitations of alternatives—and make each example directly support its paragraph’s main point.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “medical research projects,” “funds,” “vaccines,” “resources” and “success.” This gives the reader a basic understanding of your argument. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations are inaccurate, sometimes making the meaning less clear. For example, “given fund” and “funds for private companies held medical research projects” do not express the intended ideas naturally; “budget friendly” is also informal for this essay. Spelling errors such as “Authorites,” “freindly” and “comanies,” along with repeated use of “projects” and “researches,” further weaken control. Build a more precise set of phrases for funding, conducting research and describing costs, and check spelling and word forms carefully.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple statements and longer sentences, and the reader can usually identify your main position. However, the range of sentence structures is limited, and attempts at more complex constructions are often faulty. For example, “Often medical research projects are thesedays, given fund by private companies” has an unclear passive construction and misplaced punctuation, while “Funds for private companies held medical research projects are quite less” is difficult to parse. There are also recurring problems with articles, agreement, plurals and sentence boundaries, as in “the ratio of success is very less” and the run-on ending “private comaniesThe ratio.” These errors sometimes make relationships between ideas hard to follow. Practise accurate passive forms and build longer sentences from clear clauses, with consistent punctuation.
