IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Nowadays, private sectors invest money in medical studies. I firmly believe that government should take responsibility of funding medical projects which should be helpful for lower income public in and treatment of long term diseases. However, private companies plays their vital role in this field.
One major reason that government more focuses on citizen's health rather than profit as companies should earn. Some diseases affect small group of to which private firms have limited investment than state help those and never let them helpless. For instance, individuals having such disease and their income is not enough, should be the responsibility of government. Therefore the state had to cover there dues throughout the disease without considering any profit.
Furthermore, in some cases the private companies never show any concern-the treatment goes long it requires month or some how years to be cure. For instance the government should consider these cases until to be successfully treated. Consequently, it leads to the patients safety and better treatment.
In conclusion, these steps that the government should took responsibility could to lead to solutions of many problems and no citizen should feel helpless themselves.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
Your position is identifiable: you believe the government should fund medical research, while acknowledging that private companies also have a role. The points about prioritising public health over profit and supporting people with rare or long-term illnesses are relevant. However, the response addresses the question only partially: it does not clearly compare government funding with research funded by individuals, and the examples remain general rather than showing how public funding would improve research or access to treatment. The second body paragraph repeats the idea of government support without developing a distinct reason. The response is also 61 words below the required minimum, which limits the space available to explain and support your position. Develop each reason with a specific example and address all the funding options directly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5
The response has a recognisable structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs and a conclusion. Linking expressions such as “Furthermore,” “For instance,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of your argument. However, progression between ideas is not always clear: the second body paragraph begins with private companies’ lack of concern, then shifts to what the government should do, without explaining the connection fully. Some references are also difficult to follow, as in “those” and “these cases,” because the reader cannot readily identify their precise referents. The conclusion largely repeats the position rather than drawing the reasons together. Use clearer topic sentences, connect each example explicitly to its main point, and make pronoun references precise.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “medical studies,” “long term diseases,” “private companies,” and “treatment,” so the general subject is clear. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “take responsibility” and “citizen’s health.” However, the range is limited and several inaccurate or unnatural choices make parts difficult to understand: “private sectors” is imprecise, “cover there dues” does not express the intended meaning, and “the patients safety” is awkward. Repetition of “government,” “companies,” and “treatment” also restricts variety. Build a more precise set of phrases for funding and research, and check collocations and word forms when revising. For example, use “public funding” and “medical research” consistently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt to combine ideas using subordinate clauses and connectors, for example in “Some diseases affect small group …” and “the treatment goes long it requires month…”. However, complex sentences are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to make several sentences hard to interpret. Examples include missing articles in “affect small group,” subject–verb disagreement in “private companies plays,” and incorrect verb forms in “the government should took responsibility.” Sentence boundaries and punctuation are also problematic, particularly in “the treatment goes long it requires month or some how years to be cure.” Aim first for accurate, complete simple sentences, then add one clear subordinate clause at a time. Check agreement, articles, verb forms and punctuation during proofreading.
