IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.5)

In last few decades, several medical research experiments are held and funded by private organizations. In my opinion, the government is more suitable to conduct medical research as they have access to wide range of data from around the nation and there will be no corruption or misuse of data by the government.

The primary reason why the government of a country is more preferable for medical projects is that the corruption of money or misuse of data will not be practiced. The government will be abided by the laws and held accountable for their practices, which will ensure they follow all the rules and regulations strictly than any company or individuals. For example, the government starts a research on the patients suffering from heart attack, they will make sure that personal information of the patient is not disclosed or misused, and will also keep a record of the money spent on the research. This will result in an efficient data security and non-corruptive procedures than private companies.

Another reason is that the government will have access to a wide range of medical data from around the nation. The government of a country has facilitated every city with a government public hospital, which is accessed by thousands of people everyday. This results in a massive amount of data collection from all round the country, and it can be used for various medical research projects. For example, the government can conduct research on cancer and heart attack simultaneously as they have access to all the required data in huge quantities. As a result, the research will have impressive results in less time and complexity.

In conclusion, I believe that the government is a superior option to conduct a medical research project than private companies or individuals because the government cannot corrupt the finances or misuse the data, and they have access to a huge collection of data required for research.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear throughout: you argue that governments should conduct medical research, and you support this with two relevant reasons—accountability and access to nationwide medical data. The examples about protecting heart patients’ information and researching cancer and heart disease help explain your points. This meets the task well, but the comparison with individuals and private companies is not explored in much depth, and the claim that government research will avoid corruption is stated too categorically rather than qualified or supported. The second reason is more fully illustrated than the first, while the practical limits or risks of government-led research are not considered. Developing these comparisons and adding a more balanced explanation would make the argument more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The response is organised clearly into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Each body paragraph has a distinct central idea, and the progression from accountability to data access is easy to follow. Linking phrases such as “The primary reason,” “Another reason,” and “As a result” guide the reader through the argument. At times, however, the connections feel formulaic, and repeated references to “the government” and “research” make the flow less flexible. The conclusion also repeats the two reasons in almost the same terms as the introduction. Use a wider range of referencing and transitions, and make the final paragraph synthesise the argument rather than restating it, to strengthen cohesion further.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “medical research,” “personal information,” “data collection,” and “rules and regulations,” so your meaning remains clear. There are also attempts at more formal expressions, such as “accountable” and “simultaneously.” However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “corruption of money,” “non-corruptive procedures,” and “impressive results in less time and complexity” do not express the intended ideas naturally. “Experiments are held” is also an awkward choice in this context. Aim for precise collocations and avoid repeating “government” and “data” where alternatives such as “public authorities” and “records” fit. This would make the vocabulary more controlled and flexible.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including clauses with “which,” “as,” and “because,” and most sentences communicate the intended meaning. Some grammatical errors remain, particularly with articles, verb forms, and agreement. For example, “In last few decades” needs an article and a different preposition, while “experiments are held” uses an unsuitable verb form for the intended meaning. In “the government … as they have access,” the pronoun does not agree clearly with the singular subject. There are also missing articles in phrases such as “starts a research” and “conduct a research.” Review article use and subject–pronoun agreement, and check verb patterns when constructing longer sentences. Greater accuracy across these structures would improve control.
