IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Recently, some health research projects are financed by self owned organisations.I am strongly of the opinion that gorvernment should carry out research.
On one hand, research should be done by public because of provision of funds.Research projects involves money to procere materials from different sources for it to be successful. For instance, during Ebola virus few years ago, there was high demand for it's vaccine which will be done through research, government provided money to source for maaterials to produce the vaccines making it quite easier to carrry out the project.
Similarly, the involvement of goverment helped in provision of manpower. The three tiers of government; federal, state, and local will help recruite a lot of specialist who will carry out a research which will help fast-track a project without delay thereby benefitting the public. Again, these personnels are those who are knowledgeable in their various field like; Doctors, Nurses, Engineers, ETC, who will put all hands on desk, to effectively carry out the requested research project.
On the contrary, individuals carry out research projects well through their philanthropists support. There is no doubt that some people who dont belong to any goverment establishment have contributed efficiently to public by providing their financial assistance to carry out research on their own, without any restriction or set backs because they have a set target usually short term goal, which yield result within a specified period of time without delay.
In conclusion, aside the philantropist support from individual, i am mostly of the view that research projects are better carried out effectively through provision of funds to acquire resources and provision of manpower to actively carry out reserch work.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear: you believe governments should conduct medical research, and you give relevant reasons involving funding and specialist staff. The Ebola vaccine example helps illustrate the funding point, while the paragraph about individual philanthropists acknowledges another option in the question. However, the discussion is uneven: the government’s role is explained in more detail than the alternatives, and the claim that public funding makes research easier is not fully supported with specific explanation. The task asks you to consider whether research should be carried out by private companies, individuals or government; private companies are not discussed directly. Develop the comparison and explain why government is preferable to both other sources, using more precise supporting examples.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5
The response has an identifiable introduction, body paragraphs and a conclusion, and the ideas are grouped broadly by funding, manpower and individual support. However, progression is weakened by mechanical or unclear linking. “On one hand” is not followed by a clearly balanced “on the other hand,” and “Similarly” introduces manpower as a related point without making the relationship precise. The conclusion repeats the main position, but it is duplicated and ends with the incomplete phrase “aside the technical support that,” which disrupts the overall structure. Some sentences also contain several ideas joined together, making relationships harder to follow. Use one clear paragraph for each main reason, connect examples directly to claims, and proofread the ending and transitions.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use some relevant topic vocabulary, including “research projects,” “vaccine,” “manpower,” “specialist” and “financial assistance,” so the main subject is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “fast-track a project.” However, the range is limited and several inaccurate or misspelled choices reduce precision: “self owned organisations,” “procere materials,” “maaterials,” “carrry out,” “philantropist” and “reserch.” Some expressions are also unnatural, including “put all hands on desk” and “set backs.” These errors make the writing less clear and polished. Build a reliable set of collocations for research funding and staffing, and check spelling and word forms carefully before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a sentence explaining how government tiers could recruit specialists and a complex sentence about individual support. However, control is inconsistent, and errors occur in agreement, verb forms, articles and sentence construction. For example, “Research projects involves” has a subject–verb agreement error, while “which will be done through research” does not clearly connect to its intended noun. The sentence beginning “The three tiers of government” is difficult to manage and contains a faulty verb form in “will help recruite.” Punctuation and spacing are also inconsistent, and the final sentence fragment prevents a complete ending. Practise accurate subject–verb agreement and build longer sentences from clear clauses, then check each sentence for a complete grammatical structure.
