IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent times, private organizations provide funds for the medical research projects. I believe that private companies should continue doing it because they can also get various benefits in return and may ease pressure on public funds.
Private companies should help with medical research projects because in this way they may release extra burden on public funds. As we know, governments have to take care of public projects including building of schools, hospitals and roads and they need an ample amount of money for this purpose. If they will spend funds on medical reasearch, they might compromise on public facilities. As a result, citizens will suffer. For example, if authorities start funding these reasearches, they might suffer from low fundings needed to build new hospital.
Furthermore, private companies could also benefit from these projects. For example, data shows that in many countries private firms give money to researchers for scientific studies and in return the employees of these firms enjoy a lot of health benefits from health department. In case any employee fell ill and need an emegency surgery, he can receive it in certain hospitals free of cost. That money is cut from employee's annual income and is added to comapny's income. So, these comapnies enjoy this benefit in return.
To conclude, medical research projects are essential for the country and its people but they need an ample amount of money. In my opinion, private companies should continue providing money to these researchers because they can also get various benefits through them and can reduce the pressure on goverment funds that could otherwise be used on public facilities.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5
Your position is clear: you support private companies funding medical research, and you give two relevant reasons—reducing pressure on public budgets and providing benefits to company employees. The first reason is explained through public spending on schools, hospitals and roads, while the employee example attempts to show a return for firms. However, the response only partly develops the task: it does not meaningfully compare private funding with funding by individuals, and the second example is confusing about how employee healthcare benefits generate income for a company. The claim that governments would have to compromise public facilities is also presented as certain rather than explored. Develop the reasoning more carefully and address the alternatives in the question to make the response more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a coherent overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs present separate reasons, and the conclusion restates your position. Linking phrases such as “Furthermore,” “For example,” and “To conclude” help readers follow this structure. This clear paragraphing and progression are strengths. However, some connections within the second body paragraph are difficult to follow: the shift from employee health benefits to money being deducted from annual income and added to company income does not clearly explain the relationship between these points. The conclusion also repeats much of the introduction rather than drawing the reasons together. Clarify how each example supports its paragraph’s main claim and use referencing that makes the relationships between people, companies and funds explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate your main ideas, including “medical research projects,” “public funds,” “public facilities” and “health benefits.” There is some attempt to use more formal expressions, such as “ample amount” and “compromise on public facilities.” However, word choice and collocation are often inaccurate or repetitive, which limits precision: “release extra burden” is not a natural phrase, and “low fundings” is awkward. Several spelling errors, including “reasearches,” “emegency” and “comapnies,” are noticeable. Aim for more natural academic collocations and check spelling carefully. More precise terms for funding and the financial relationship between employers and healthcare would also help make the second example easier to understand.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including conditional structures such as “If they will spend funds on medical research, they might compromise on public facilities” and a relative clause in “funds that could otherwise be used on public facilities.” These attempts show some range, and the overall meaning is generally recoverable. However, complex sentences are not consistently controlled. For example, the conditional should use a past form after “if” (“If they spent…”), and “if any employee fell ill and need” shifts incorrectly between verb forms. There are also agreement and article problems in “he can receive it” and “build new hospital.” Practise accurate conditional patterns, consistent verb forms, and singular/plural agreement; these corrections would make your reasoning clearer.
