IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Currently, a large number of healthcare studies are financed by the private sector. While some believe that research should be carried out by private companies or scientists, critics argue that the state should take responsibility. From my perspective, the involvement of private sector is positive development, however the leadership of the state with a contribution of of private investment is effective approach.
To begin with, the private companies have the larger budget to invest on healthcare research. Additionally the privately owned labs are more advanced as compare with government sector, which leads to faster development of medicines and vaccines. For e.g. the vaccination for the covid 19 is discovered by Pfizer and Moderna. Although private companies are faster and advanced, it has few draw backs. The main motive privately owned companies is collecting profit, so often poor people and rare disease may get ignored and they hide negative results.
Furthermore, the government focuses more on public healthcare not in collecting profits so they share results more openly, and supports the long term funding of a basic research projects. The government research may be more reliable even though it also have some draw backs. The government have a limited budget, so healthcare may compete with other priorities such as education, and defense.
Thirdly, The research carried out by individuals are independent and creative. Individuals have no commercial and reputational pressure like government and private companies. Though individuals have some freedom, they often lack funding and equipment which is only suitable for small-scale work.
In conclusion, the partnership between government, private companies and scientists can provide better results, where the companies provide money and speed while the state can ensure transparency and ethics. Government can handle neglected diseases e.g. malaria In contrast, the individuals and profit companies can handle profitable areas.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
Your position is clear: you favour a partnership in which private firms contribute investment and speed while government provides oversight and supports neglected areas. You address all three options—companies, the state and individuals—and give relevant reasons, including profit incentives, public funding limits and individuals’ lack of equipment. The examples of COVID-19 vaccines and malaria help make the discussion concrete. Most points are extended with an explanation, but the individual-research paragraph is less developed than the others, and claims such as private labs being more advanced are broad rather than supported or qualified. To strengthen the response, explain more precisely how responsibilities should be divided and develop the individual researchers’ contribution with a specific example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The response has a clear overall progression: it introduces the debate and your position, considers private companies, government and individuals in separate paragraphs, then returns to your preferred partnership in the conclusion. Linking expressions such as “To begin with,” “Furthermore” and “In conclusion” make the sequence easy to follow, and contrasts such as “Although” and “even though” help connect opposing points. Some transitions feel mechanical, particularly “Thirdly,” after the preceding paragraphs, and the conclusion’s final contrast between individuals and profit-making companies is not fully clear. A few sentences also pack several related claims together. Use more varied, precise links and make the relationship between each paragraph’s main point and your final recommendation explicit.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use an adequate range for the topic, including terms such as “public healthcare,” “long term funding,” “transparency,” “ethics” and “neglected diseases.” There is also some flexibility in expressing contrasts between commercial incentives and public responsibilities. However, several word choices or collocations are inaccurate or awkward, including “invest on healthcare research,” “the larger budget,” “draw backs” and “collecting profits.” “The vaccination for the covid 19” is also imprecise for the intended example. These do not prevent the reader from understanding your argument, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim to learn topic vocabulary in common combinations, and check spelling and word forms, including “COVID-19” and “drawbacks,” before submitting.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including concessive clauses (“Although private companies are faster…”) and a relative clause (“which leads to faster development…”). The meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain across the response. Examples include missing or incorrect articles in “the involvement of private sector” and “a effective approach,” agreement errors in “it also have” and “The government have,” and the malformed phrase “a contribution of of private investment.” There are also punctuation and sentence-boundary issues, such as the comma splice in the opening position statement and inconsistent capitalisation after “Thirdly” and before “In contrast.” Review articles, subject–verb agreement and sentence boundaries, then proofread for repeated words and punctuation.
