IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Many contemporary healthcare research projects are sponsored by private industries. I believe, it is a highly significant development as government has many other areas to patron and involvement of different stakeholders surely enhance the level of research.

Any state government has to resolve of a lot of issues and facilitate various departments. It is improbable that each of the areas is looked after with equal efficiency and financial support. Therefore, it is a common practice around the world that important tasks like medical researches are carried out with the support of private investors. It saves a lot of money and effort of the public authorities which can be put in effect to attend other avenues. For instance, almost all of the known medicines in Pakistan are made after studies done by private companies like Abbot and Getz Pharma.

In addition to saving expenses for the state, private patronage of healthcare projects ensure the consistent improvement in the studies. This is because the procedures are not then limited to a single public laboratory rather the research happens across joint research centers of private and public institutions. This means that more scientists are involved and, if needed, private centers can use their personal connections across border to ensure that the project is carried out with highest efficacy. Since the research is performed across many medical centers, transparency is kept in check automatically which is highly unlikely if a single government institution carries out the medical research project. For example, the public healthcare sector of Pakistan is yet to produce any notable medical research due to its corrupt authorities.

In conclusion, involvement of private sector into medical field for research purposes is certainly a viable pursuit as it not only saves government funds and time but also ensure regular improvement and transparency of the medical studies.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you support private-sector involvement, and you give relevant reasons concerning public spending, research capacity and transparency. The examples of pharmaceutical companies in Pakistan and limited public-sector research help connect the argument to a real context. However, the discussion does not fully address the alternatives in the question—individuals and government—because it mainly contrasts private companies with government and does not explain whether individuals should fund or conduct research. Some claims, such as private involvement automatically ensuring transparency, are asserted rather than sufficiently explained. To strengthen the response, compare the roles of all three options and qualify broad claims with clearer reasoning or evidence.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs develop supporting reasons, and the conclusion restates the position. The progression from saving public resources to improving research is easy to follow, and examples are placed in relevant paragraphs. This meets the lower-band expectation of coherent organisation and shows some features of stronger progression. However, links between ideas can feel mechanical, particularly the repeated use of “This means” and “Since,” while some references are not fully clear—for example, “the project” could refer to medical research generally or a particular project. Use a wider range of linking methods and make connections between claims more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “private investors,” “joint research centers,” “transparency” and “public authorities.” These choices make the subject clear, and you attempt less common expressions. However, some word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural, such as “areas to patron,” “private patronage,” “personal connections across border” and “carried out with highest efficacy.” “Medical researches” is also an awkward form in this context. These slips do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for established academic collocations and check whether a chosen word fits its intended meaning and grammatical form.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex structures, including conditional phrasing (“if needed”) and cause-and-effect clauses (“This is because…”). Most sentences communicate the intended meaning, but some grammatical errors remain. For example, “I believe, it is” has incorrect punctuation, “government has” needs an article or plural form, and “private patronage … ensure” has a subject–verb agreement error. There are also issues with articles and prepositions in “with highest efficacy” and “across border.” These are generally understandable, but they reduce accuracy. Review agreement, articles and punctuation, then proofread longer sentences to ensure each clause is grammatically complete.
