IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

The topic of medical research projects being funded by private companies instead of individuals or government sparks a lot of debate nowadays, In my opinion these researches should be funded by government instead of private companies or any individuals and i have several important reasons for that.

The main reason these programs should be funded by government is because the private companies fund these programs for their personal growth or to make a significant name in the market which somehow in my opinion is only benifitial for a few people which are linked to this research but if our government will fund and organise these programs on national levels most of the deserving people will have a chance to persue their career on a high scale to get some authentic and significant results on international levels which will definetely earn your nation respect worldwide, For example the research of [DR.ABDUL QADIR KHAN] which has played a wonderful role to make pakistan a nuclear power, Moreover the second reason is more programs organised and funded by government will create a hope for a lot of people who quit their studies just because of their point of view over unemployement, It will motivate a lot of students who dont afford a huge budget to go abroad for more research in their studies.

Consequently medical research should not be carried by any private company or any individual for their personal benefits or earning, The government should be responsible for all these database or experimental reaserches in my opinion.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you argue that government, rather than private companies or individuals, should fund medical research. You give relevant reasons, including wider access to research opportunities and the possibility of encouraging students who cannot afford to study abroad. However, the response does not fully develop the medical-research focus: the example of Abdul Qadir Khan concerns nuclear research, so its relevance to medical funding is not explained. The claim that government funding would produce more deserving researchers and earn national respect also needs a clearer link to public health outcomes. To strengthen the response, explain how public funding can prioritise treatments or research needs that may not be profitable, and support this with a directly relevant example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has an overall structure: it introduces your view, gives reasons and an example, then restates your position. Linking expressions such as “The main reason,” “Moreover,” and “Consequently” help signal the stages of your argument. However, most of the reasoning is packed into one very long body paragraph, making the progression difficult to follow. The opening sentence also contains several ideas before the main position is clearly separated. Some connections are mechanical, and the relationship between the nuclear-research example and medical research is not made explicit. Use separate paragraphs for distinct reasons, and organise each around a clear point followed by explanation and relevant evidence.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “funded,” “research,” “authentic results,” and “unemployment,” and your meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “on international levels” and “personal benefits.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or imprecise, including “these researches,” “make a significant name,” and “database or experimental researches.” Spelling errors such as “benifitial,” “persue,” and “definetely” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural combinations and check spelling carefully; for example, refer to “research projects” rather than “researches,” and describe companies as seeking “commercial gain” rather than “personal growth.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt complex sentences to explain causes and consequences, and the reader can usually understand your main position. However, control is uneven, particularly in the long sentence beginning “The main reason these programs should be funded by government is because…”. It contains several clauses joined without clear punctuation, and the sentence becomes difficult to process. There are also errors in sentence boundaries and capitalization, such as the comma before “In my opinion” and lowercase “i.” Some sentence patterns are awkwardly formed, including “if our government will fund” and “people who quit their studies just because of their point of view over unemployment.” Break long sentences into shorter units, use appropriate punctuation, and check verb forms and clause structure.
