IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
In recent times, as we are modernising with new Technology in the medical field, there have been many research projects funded by private companies and individuals.
I stand with this Idea and give my full support for private companies' and individuals' research to continue because it gives us quick results with the same standards and makes the market competitive, which gives direct benefit to the consumer.
For example: If private companies start medical research, they will hire the best talent, and their funds are dedicated to their research. If companies grow, they will invest more in their R&D and start new research, while the government has to focus on many things at a time, and sometimes they cut down the research budget and uses it somewhere else, which is not good for the research.
I believe that there should be very strict rules and regulations for research companies so that they do not misuse their research or focus only on making a profit.
I believe there has to be clear instructions that medical research projects are for everyone, not only private companies. If they made any medicine early, it would help to save many lives, even though there are many direct and indirect business starts and many people will be employed.
In conclusion, I get the point that there might be many consequences, but the number of benefits outweighs them, so I stand with the idea that private companies and individuals should carry out medical research and help in the development of the country and the rest of the world.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you support private companies and individuals conducting medical research, and you give relevant reasons, including dedicated funding, competition and potential benefits to patients. The example about companies hiring skilled researchers helps explain your view, while your call for strict regulation acknowledges a possible risk. This meets the task well, but the comparison with government research is less fully developed: the claim that governments must divide attention and may redirect budgets would benefit from a specific example or explanation of how this affects research outcomes. The point that research should be “for everyone” is also important but remains vague. To strengthen the response further, explain how access to medicines could be protected and develop the comparison across all three options more evenly.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a recognisable progression: it introduces your position, gives reasons and an example, considers regulation, and ends with a conclusion that restates your view. Paragraphing helps separate these stages, and links such as “For example” and “In conclusion” make the overall direction easy to follow. However, some connections are mechanical, and the paragraph beginning “I believe there has to be clear instructions” introduces a new point without clearly linking it to the preceding discussion of regulation. The reference in “If they made any medicine early” is also unclear: “they” could refer to companies or researchers. Use more precise transitions and refer back to ideas explicitly so the argument progresses smoothly rather than feeling like a sequence of separate points.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “medical research,” “competitive,” “strict rules and regulations,” “misuse,” and “direct and indirect” business effects. These choices communicate your main ideas, and some topic-specific language supports the argument. At times, however, wording is imprecise or collocationally awkward, such as “standards” in “quick results with the same standards,” “dedicated to their research,” and “business starts.” Capitalisation is also inconsistent in “Technology” and “Idea.” These issues do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and naturalness. Aim for more exact expressions, such as describing research as “well-funded” or “commercially driven,” and check that each phrase conveys the intended relationship clearly.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including a conditional structure in “If private companies start medical research, they will hire the best talent” and a longer contrast with government funding. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “the government … cut down the research budget and uses it” has a subject–verb agreement problem; “there has to be clear instructions” needs agreement between the verb and plural noun; and “there are many direct and indirect business starts” has an unclear grammatical construction. The sentence beginning “If they made any medicine early” also shifts into a less clear conditional form. Review agreement, clause structure and punctuation, and break up long sentences where needed to improve control.
