IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

These days, a number of medical research projects are sponsored by private companies. This is a legal practice which is of immense value and I consider this a great initiative.

A number of examples are present from the past that researchers with huge talents lagged behind because of funding opportunities. They could thrive in the medical fields but the ignorance of politicians, government representatives or healthcare authorities cost them a lot . They initiated such projects which might be ended with life saving results however their projects were not possible without government or other funding sources.

The modern era researches needs a lot of financial support , atmosphere, labs and up to the mark equipment and gadgets. This practice is a game changer in the underdevelopment countries. There is a lot of talent in those countries, however the lack of opportunities keep them behind. Government can not sponsor them all or sometimes they do not prioritize this practice. The private companies and firms give them a helping hand and opportunity to grow in the field and do something for the society. This is bringing a lot of life saving drugs and medically engineered equipments to the market for business and for patients. The biggest example is my second cousin who is part of research project to cure diabetes, which obviously wasn't possible here.

Nowadays, funds are also issued to the professors in developed countries. They hunt such talent from the world which have the potential and can make difference in the healthcare or medical fields. They sponsor such students and give them space and time to continue their projects which are bringing positive results.

So, it is evident that individual and private companies are playing a vital role in the field of medicine. They provide financial support and labs and the researchers give their talent which is making a huge impact on the society.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear preference for private-company funding, describing it as “a great initiative,” and explain how it may support researchers where government funding is limited. The examples of talent in developing countries and your cousin’s diabetes project are relevant. However, the task asks you to consider whether research should be funded by private companies, individuals, or government, and the response focuses mainly on private firms. The role of individuals is mentioned only briefly, while government funding is discussed mostly as insufficient; the advantages and risks of each option are not compared. Several claims, such as private funding bringing life-saving drugs to market, would benefit from specific explanation or evidence. Develop the alternatives and clarify whether you favour one source or a combination.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, supporting paragraphs, and a concluding statement. The paragraphs generally stay on the topic of funding and research, and linking expressions such as “however,” “Nowadays,” and “So” help show relationships between ideas. Nevertheless, progression is sometimes unclear because several points are repeated rather than developed: the lack of government support and the help offered by private companies appear in more than one paragraph. Some references are also difficult to follow, particularly “They hunt such talent,” where the referent is not immediately clear, and “which obviously wasn’t possible here” leaves the location and circumstances unexplained. Organise the body around distinct comparisons—government, private companies, and individuals—and use clearer references to make the argument easier to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “financial support,” “life saving results,” “medical fields,” and “healthcare authorities,” which helps communicate the subject. There are also attempts at more expressive phrasing, such as “a game changer” and “give them a helping hand.” However, the range is limited and some word choices or collocations sound unnatural, including “funding opportunities,” “modern era researches,” “up to the mark equipment,” and “funds are also issued.” Repetition of “projects,” “support,” and “field” also limits precision. Choose more conventional academic expressions and vary key terms—for example, describe research as being “funded,” “conducted,” or “supported,” depending on the meaning. More precise vocabulary would make the argument clearer and more formal.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “however,” and “which,” and the main ideas are generally understandable. However, errors in agreement, verb forms, articles, and sentence construction occur often enough to make some sentences awkward or unclear. Examples include “The modern era researches needs,” “the lack of opportunities keep them behind,” and “which have the potential”; these require more accurate agreement and noun forms. The sentence beginning “They initiated such projects which might be ended” also has an unclear and inaccurate verb construction. Punctuation and spacing are inconsistent, and the final standalone “I” should be removed. Focus on checking subject–verb agreement and building complex sentences around a clear main clause.
