IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 5.0)
Medical reseach projects recieve finincial support from private companies currently. In my opinion, researches should be conducted by government institutions instead of private sectors and individuals as they are taking money on a regular bases.
Admittedly, administration should invest on all reseach projects rather than individuals. This is because, government is already taking money from them in the form of taxes. In the country, there are lot of taxes which all citizens have to pay such as toll taxes ,water taxes , credit taxes etc.For instance,a survey was conducted by monetary fund team of india whose final report stated that 90% people are paying huge taxes to government .

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.0
Your position is identifiable: you favour government institutions over private companies and individuals. You also give one reason, arguing that citizens already contribute through taxes, and attempt to support it with a reference to a survey. However, the response addresses the task only minimally: it does not explain why government research would be preferable in practice, discuss the role of private companies or individuals in any detail, or develop a relevant example. The claim about “90% people” paying taxes does not clearly show how public funding leads to better medical research. The response is also substantially below the required 250 words, leaving the argument incomplete. Develop several relevant reasons and explain how each supports your position.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0
There is a basic organisational shape: an opening paragraph states your opinion, followed by a paragraph beginning “Admittedly” that introduces a reason and an example. Linking expressions such as “This is because” and “For instance” help show the intended relationships between ideas. However, there is no clear overall progression beyond this single reason, and the example does not lead to a developed explanation or conclusion. The opening also says research should be conducted by government, while the next paragraph focuses mainly on tax collection, so the connection between the paragraphs is not fully established. Use separate paragraphs for distinct reasons, and make each one progress from claim to explanation to relevant evidence.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.0
You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “medical research projects,” “private companies,” “government institutions,” and “taxes,” so the reader can identify the subject and your main position. However, the range is limited and several spelling or word-choice errors make the writing less clear, such as “reseach,” “finincial,” and “recieve.” Some expressions are also imprecise: “taking money on a regular bases” does not clearly express your intended point, and “credit taxes” is unclear in this context. Aim for accurate, natural collocations and more precise terms for public funding and research. Proofreading spelling and checking whether each phrase conveys your intended meaning would improve clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple sentences and a complex sentence with “This is because,” and the main position can generally be understood. However, the range is limited, and errors occur in sentence structure, agreement, articles, plurals, and punctuation. For example, “researches should be conducted” uses an unsuitable plural form for the general idea, while “government is already taking money” needs clearer article use and a more appropriate grammatical construction. In “there are lot of taxes,” the article is missing, and the long final sentence has run-together punctuation. Practise building accurate complex sentences and check articles, singular and plural forms, and sentence boundaries before submitting.
