IELTS Writing Task 2 question

Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Most of the research works conducted are being backed by private corporations with their own money. I strongly believe that the medical research should not be held by only private companies but also collaborate with government for a better output.

First of all, private companies has limited access to funding. Most of the time they narrow down their work because of shortage resources. As a result, they cant generate a better result or outcome from the research. For instance, most of the private universities who conducts research hire less Research Assistants for their project with minimal salary. Therefore, the universities lack experts for their research projects.

So, the government can help these private organizations to carry their research work by collaborating with them. They can fund them and provide them experts from different reputated public organizations. For example, a Bangladesh government initiative called SICIP provides both funding and industry experts to support private organization to teach skills individuals who lacks proper industry experience. This same method can be applied to the medical research field for a substantial output.

To conclude, in my opinion both private and public organization carry out medical research by colloborating together where the government can provide money and skill and the private organizations could use their infrastructures to accelerate the research projects. This colloboration could be one of the finest approach to conduct research in medical field.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You give a clear position: medical research should involve both private organisations and government, with public funding and expertise complementing private infrastructure. The paragraphs about limited funding and government support are relevant, and the SICIP example helps illustrate a possible partnership. However, the response does not fully explore the alternatives in the question, particularly research conducted by individuals, and the example concerns skills training rather than medical research, so its relevance needs to be explained more directly. Several claims, such as private companies having limited access to funding, are asserted without enough support or qualification. The response is also 19 words below the required minimum. Develop the main reasons with specific medical-research examples and address the options more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs explain the funding and partnership arguments, and a conclusion restates your position. Sequencing phrases such as “First of all,” “As a result,” and “To conclude” make the progression easy to follow. However, the link between the SICIP example and medical research is asserted rather than fully demonstrated, and the second body paragraph moves quickly from government funding to expertise and then to the example. Some references, including “them” and “This same method,” could be made more precise. To strengthen cohesion, organise each paragraph around one developed point and explain explicitly how each example supports it.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a range of topic-related vocabulary, including “funding,” “research projects,” “industry experts,” and “infrastructures,” and the main ideas remain understandable. There are also attempts at more formal phrasing, such as “substantial output.” However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward: “research works,” “held by,” “shortage resources,” and “finest approach” do not sound natural in this context. Spelling errors such as “colloboration” and “reputated” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, conventional academic collocations and check spelling; for example, use “research,” “conducted by,” “a shortage of resources,” and “a highly effective approach.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including cause-and-effect structures such as “As a result, they cant generate a better result” and a relative clause in “individuals who lacks proper industry experience.” The overall meaning is generally clear, but errors in agreement, articles, and sentence construction recur. For example, “private companies has” should be “private companies have,” and “universities who conducts” should be “universities that conduct.” In “the medical research,” the article is unnecessary, while “shortage resources” needs a grammatical link: “a shortage of resources.” The final sentence also has an awkward structure around “both private and public organization carry out.” Review subject–verb agreement and article use, then proofread complex sentences.
