IELTS Writing Task 2 question
Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 6.0)
Funding in medical research process has become increasingly common by private company as people's interest in medical research continued to grow. Although funding by private companies have substantially helped this section to grow, but they alone can not carry forward many groundbreaking researches in this field. I believe, a complete balance of private, government and individual funding will be the best approach to conduct more medical researches.
One major disadvantages on relying heavily on private companies funding is that the limited funding may set limit to medical research projects. Some research projects requires a lengthy time duration along with a large funding. Although limited funding will help to conduct research projects in small settings within limited time-frame, but it will automatically set obstacles for large projects with detailed methodology and time frame. Consequently, poor research methodology may result as a research quality degradation and low-quality research.
Furthermore, different private companies have selective medical sector and population of interest. Additionally, researchers may experience demotivation and monotonous as funding from the same organizations may bring same research criteria, potentially reducing the diversity of research. These eventually will decline the quality of research in medical sector.
BMRC funding, Bangladesh Medical Research Council funding, provides as a relevant example. Since years, this government organization is providing considerable funds for conducting communicable and non-communicable diseases’ research. While data are developing in these divisions, Others sectors like nutrition, cardiovascular disease, genetical diseases remain underdeveloped. This suggests, funding from one source alone is insufficient to ensure proper medical research development.
In conclusion, though current medical researches are praiseworthy, but I do not consider tolimit the research interests aligning with selective funding source. Thus funding only from the private company can not be the best standalone solution. Instead funding from multiple sources shoud be adopted that combines private companies, government and individual for setting a enriched medical research sector and ensuring better medical service.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear: you argue that medical research should draw on private, government and individual funding rather than rely on one source. You give relevant reasons, including the limits of private funding and the risk that funders’ priorities narrow research, and the BMRC example helps illustrate how some areas may receive less attention. This addresses the task and shows some development. However, the discussion focuses mainly on the drawbacks of private funding; the benefits of each source and how a balanced model would work are not explained in comparable detail. The BMRC example also needs a clearer link to your proposed role for private companies and individuals. Developing these points more fully would make the argument more complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction states your view, body paragraphs present concerns and an example, and the conclusion restates your recommendation. Connectors such as “Furthermore,” “Consequently,” and “In conclusion” help signal the stages of the argument. The overall progression is understandable, though some links feel mechanical or unclear. For example, “These eventually will decline the quality” does not clearly identify what “These” refers to, and the BMRC paragraph shifts from the general argument to a specific example without fully explaining the connection. The conclusion repeats the central position but could synthesise the reasons more directly. Clearer referencing and more explicit links between claims and examples would strengthen cohesion.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use a relevant range of topic vocabulary, including “groundbreaking research,” “research methodology,” “communicable and non-communicable diseases,” and “funding source.” These choices show an effort to discuss medical research specifically, and the intended meaning is generally clear. However, several word-choice and collocation problems reduce precision: “set limit to” is awkward, “research quality degradation” is unnatural, and “demotivation and monotonous” does not express the intended idea accurately. There are also spelling and word-form slips, such as “shoud” and “genetical.” Aim to learn common academic collocations and check whether nouns, adjectives and verbs fit their context. More natural phrasing would make your argument sound more controlled.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including concessive clauses beginning with “Although” and a relative clause in “projects with detailed methodology and time frame.” This gives the response some structural variety, and the main ideas remain understandable. However, some errors in agreement, articles, verb forms and sentence construction persist. For instance, “private companies have” should agree with the singular subject in the opening, while “Some research projects requires” has a subject–verb agreement error. The “Although … but” construction is also faulty, and “I do not consider tolimit” has an incomplete verb pattern and a missing space. Review agreement and clause patterns, then proofread punctuation and sentence boundaries to improve accuracy.
