Nowadays, many medical research projects are funded by private companies. In your opinion, do you think that research should be carried by private companies, individuals or government?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, medical research plays an important role in improvement of people health. Some research projects are funded by private companies. In my opinion, government should take the main responsibilities for medical research because they can focus on public needs rather than making profits.

On the one hand, government should be responsible for conducting medical research because they have sufficent resources and public funding. they can invest money in findingcures for dangerous diseases and improving healthcare facilities. Moreover, government should fund the chariety and can be benificial for everyone, including poor people who cant afford expensive treatments. For instance, governments can support research into cancer, heart diseaes and other serious health problem.

On the other hand, private companies also play an important role in medical research. They usually have the modern technology and skilled research to develop new medicines. Furthermore, competition between companies can encourage them to discover health treatments in less time. However, their aim is oftento earn money, so some medicines may become too expensive for ordinary people.

To sum up, although private companies can make valueable contribution to medical research. I believe that government should take the leading role because public health should be more valueable than financial profit.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

Your position is clear: you argue that government should lead because it can prioritise public needs over profit, and you acknowledge a role for private companies. The response is relevant, but the reasons are only briefly explained. For example, you mention support for research into cancer and heart disease without showing how government funding would improve access or outcomes; the point about companies’ technology and competition is also not developed with a specific example. The conclusion restates your view, though “although private companies can make valuable contribution” is left as an incomplete sentence. The response contains 193 words, so it is 57 words below the 250-word minimum; the 8 words copied from the task prompt are not counted. Develop each main reason with explanation and an example to address the task more fully.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: an introduction states your view, two body paragraphs consider government and private companies, and a conclusion returns to your position. The contrast signposts “On the one hand” and “On the other hand” help readers follow the discussion, while “Moreover” and “For instance” indicate added support and an example. However, the progression within the paragraphs is sometimes abrupt because claims are listed rather than connected through explanation. The conclusion also begins with “although” but does not complete the contrast before starting a new sentence. Build clearer links between each claim and its consequence, and use complete sentences in the final paragraph to make the argument flow more smoothly.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant topic vocabulary, including “medical research,” “public funding,” “dangerous diseases,” “treatments,” and “financial profit,” so the main ideas are understandable. There are also attempts at more specific expressions such as “skilled research” and “healthcare facilities,” although some combinations are not natural or precise. Noticeable spelling errors—“sufficent,” “chariety,” “benificial,” “diseaes,” and “valueable”—reduce accuracy, and phrases such as “improvement of people health” and “making profits” could be expressed more naturally. The vocabulary is adequate for communicating your position, but the range and control are uneven. Check spelling carefully and learn common collocations for discussing funding, access to treatment, and research outcomes.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mixture of simple statements and some complex forms, including “because they can focus on public needs” and “although private companies can make…”. Most of the argument remains understandable, but errors in sentence structure and grammatical forms are noticeable. For example, “government should take the main responsibilities” needs a more suitable singular construction, and “government should fund the charity and can be beneficial” does not form a clear grammatical relationship between its clauses. The conclusion’s opening “although” clause is also incomplete when followed by a full stop. Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, as in the lowercase “they” after a full stop. Practise complete complex sentences and check articles, agreement, and clause boundaries.
